6th grade - 6:36
7th grade - 5:30
8th grade - 5:05
I always enjoyed the running and somewhere in there started training. Ran about 40mpw in 8th grade. Don't reccomend it for kids that age.

9:45 is impressive?
as a highschool freshmen maybe.
If anything kids below 10 should be running 800 and below, foster those fast twitch muscle fibers as long as you can.
He said "Decent but nothing special" or cant you read?
And I'd say it better than decent.
My high school coach, his son ran 23:25 for 5k and 6:35 for mile at age 7
"I was pretty quick when I was 8. I ran a mile in three fifty something. 3:55"

my son ran a 19:58 5k 2 weeks before is 9th birthday on a certified course. Back then he ran around 9 miles a week. He just missed going sub ten xc for a 3k last week as a 6th grader. He currently runs 20 mpw.

A 6:50 at that age is truly impressive. However, it's not very useful in telling you if he has potential to be great at it. Safe to say that by the time he is in H.S. he will be good enough to break 5 minutes. His time at this point indicates this is a safe bet. But will he be good enough to break 4:30? 4:20? Or one day 4 minutes? Who knows? He may have just got the knack of it young and may plateau. Or maybe he does have special talent?

Hi everybody - My 8 year old son just ran a 6'50" mile on the track today. I checked with the Presidential Fitness National standards, and that would put him in the 100th percentile for a boy two years his elder.
I'm not saying my son is the next greatest thing, but what do you all honestly think about how indicative this is of his running future/potential? I'm not going to be the psycho dad who burns his kid out by the time they're 12, but I also want to encourage him as much as possible if he's talented. Right now all he plays is soccer twice a week. When/how should I start spending more time with his running if he enjoys it?
Thanks!
Why hasn't Salazar been notified!!
Either you are bs-ing or he is top 5 probably in the nation. The midget (11-12) 3000 at the national JO meet had one kid under 10, barely, and that's on a track.

He ran a 6:29 at his last meet last year at age 8 and was smoked by a couple of other kids that were in the 6:05 range. I live in Cali.
Your son could be great but there are a ton of kids naturally faster.
I'll call bs on that one.
That is a pretty good time for his age group. I would say he has some amount of natural talent there. If he enjoys running I would suggest signing him up for a youth track club or letting him compete in the USATF or AAU junior olympic series track/cc meets. The youth clubs I have seen seem to have age appropriate training and JO's is a fun way for kids to compete against their age groups.
If he's in the 100th percentile, that means he's faster than EVERY SINGLE kid his age, which is likely not the case given the above posts. 99th percentile though, probably.
However, I think he'll be able to run a 2:20:00 marathon when he's in his late twenties.
These times are actually crazy. I was a 5:3o miler and a 11:10 2 miler in the 9th grade and did cross and track since the 4th grade. I'm in my first year of university now and I'm sub 9 for 3k and sub 4 for 1500
Below is the Mile WR for age 8, boys.
5:33.1 Darren O’Dell (USA) 8 Roseville, CA USA 06/09/1972
The important thing is for your son to have fun running, and just being a kid. There is little correlation for wonder kids later becoming world class adult athletes.

not BS-ing. top 5 in the nation...yes.
Fair enough, wish him continued success.
Sorry but it's true. My daughter just ran the Richmond Mini Mile in London UK on grass (so no track or spikes) in 6.52. Here's the link:
My 8-year old daughter just went 6:38. Doesn't turn 9 until November. My 6-year old daughter went 8:39 in the same race.
