1 thing we can agree on...German's best days are NOT behind him...whoever said that is just flat out wrong... Distance runners peak later on!
Lukas didn't double, he tripled. The other race he ran was a national record. Lukas wasn't actually planning on winning the 1600 it seemed, and he was more just along for the ride after his stunning 8:40.7 indoors. Once we get outdoors, I think we could see Lukas running an 8:30, 3:59 double. I don't think that this triple was as impressive as GF's was, but I do believe Lukas is better than GF was and will continue to turn out some impressive doubles this season.
This discussion is all good and well, no two of you will ever agree. One thing we can all hope for is the Lukas V. doesn't burn out as an 18 year old. Certainly GF ran well as a 17 and 18 year old, but he looks to be finished and will never be much of a threat on the big stage. GF, in my opinion, blew it with his college choice, something that LV has apparently avoided by going with a very strong program.
I wish Lukas was doing outdoor track. He could become a legend. I think he could go potentially go 3:57, 8:32 and sub 13:40.

Well damn, you may want to throw Derrick and Luke in the bunch while your at it! They havent touched their PR's since their freshman years either..hmm has Centro touched his either? throw him in the bunch too....they seem to all be on the MacDoogle train! Yee F'n Haw!
It seemed as though LV had a lot of extra work to do having to lap all the slower runners in the 5k and 2 mile. It cut his time down a bit.
I still think German's double is more impressive though.

Even though German's double was sick and definitely more impressive than LV's, I think we have finally seen the reincarnate of Galen Rupp. Seriously. This kid has all that it takes to take down Rupp's 13:37 5k, challenge (maybe break) GF's 8:34 full 2mi, and go into his frosh season at Oregon EXPECTED to compete for a top-10 finish at nats. He has the mental strength intact, is hungrier than a refugee, and appears to have the ability to absorb tons of quality work (recover) without getting injured often. The kid has some serious upside to his future.
Anyone know what training German was on in HS? I was at that CA meet and my jaw dropped after his double. That was the most "beautiful" HS distance running I had ever seen. LV and German are definitely different cats. German is a gorgeous rhythm runner who gets into a groove and can keep applying the pressure on himself. LV has that amazing loping stride but seems to be more of a strength runner with his years of cross training. German is going through a tough time with physical injuries and yeah, I'll say it, mentally, he's not right. He seems to be expecting disappointment in his races and training, like he can't trust himself, his body any more. He needs a mental adjustment - maybe it will take him popping a couple of good times to get back in the groove. Or a year without any injuries. Sure LV will have an adjustment in college, also, but will be exciting to watch.

No LV's TRIPLE is way more impressive than German's double. I never had any problem with a same day double, the 1600 just warming me up and helping me for 3200m by making the pace seem slow. So, I'd often PR in both, 4:28/9:4x, then 4:25/9:4x., then 4:18/9:29, 4:08/9:12 (state), week after week. It was two day doubles that gave me trouble, because the next day I'd be tight and feel/run poorly, not loose and great like after a 1600m with an hour or so to recover.

Seriously, German's performance was way better. He did it by himself within 2 hours of each event. Legendary.
This is really the first year the Verzbicas is concentrating on track. He was more a triathlete to this point. We'll see how things pan out. To be honest, neither guy holds a candle to Lindgren or Ryun when you consider the conditions and lack of training knowledge in the heyday of the latter two.

None of them (German, Derrick, Luke, Centro) deserve to be mentioned with McDougal yet. McDougal had an awesome college career, not as good as Rupp's (even before Rupp's senior year), but he was consistently great, season after season. Now all you fanboys might be begining to appreciate how great McDougal and especially Rupp were in college by comparing them to the four above. At 20 Rupp was breaking the CR in the 10k, taking 2nd at NCAAs in the 10k, then taking 2nd at USAs over Ritz and behind only Abdi (27:16, 2nd only behind Meb's AR 27:13) who was multi defending champ to punch his ticket to the World Championships.

Yeah, but your 3200m times get relatively worse in comparison to your 1600m. And German ran 4:11 the day before his double.
