I just noticed that in the last few seconds of the 1 mile video that as Lukas is walking off the track and behind the railing, someone gives him a big hug. If you look closely, you can see that it's Vin Lananna. He must have flown to NY to watch his new recruit after the NCAA indoors were over yesterday. Here are all three of his races this weekend. It's inevitable that Kenyan and/or Ethiopian/Eritrean born runners will own all of the American distance records from high school to college and the pros, because those nations have numerous guys at every level better or even far better than our best. On the high school level, Cheserek, who has a great story, will probably destroy this record before he's through and probably win the next two Footlocker xc championships. But of course, his age is totally uncertain and he's probably going to be several years older than typical American hs students. Verzbicas would have been a year older had he not skipped a grade. |

Cheserek is freaking 17 already. Sophomore my ass! And hes freaking a recruited kenyan. National records should definately only go to citizens. If youre kenyan and born in the US then sure have the record, not if you came here 8 months ago. |

With high school or college records and meets, I'm not concerned about race, but I am concerned about age. Let's hope Cheserek is the age of a high school soph. If not, he goes in the too old category - like Verzbicas' "freshman" records, and like a 25-26 year old Sammy Chelanga competing against 19-23 year old college students. It's not against the rules, but I don't have to like it. |
