I always run barefoot on the treadmill and have no problem at all.
It sounds to me that the issue is your shoes, which probably bother you anywhere that you wear them. It's good you were wearing them on the treadmill so that you found this out and can get rid of them.

My treadmill does the same thing.
I got it some orthotics, propped up the left side, but now it has plantar nefarious!

Happened to me today, I simply shook my head disgracefully. The other day I took my shirt off while on the treadmill, just about killed myself. For some reason 'the treadmill' brings out the worst in me.
You gotta hit the 'crete if you wanna be good at this sport.

Ha, I actually did that on my parents' treadmill when I was a kid. Ended up laying against the back wall upside down not knowing what the heck just happened.
