No Americans focus on cross country anymore, which, despite its depth, is a shame, because I think we could field a pretty good team with the likes of Ritz, Rupp, Solinsky, Teg (if healthy), etc.
Porter was a cross-country beast, and should've laid down much faster track times based on the guys he competed against in world cross, but he always seemed to merely time trial Mt. Sac. and that was it. Virgin... what can you say? Only American to win two world cross titles, which I think is better than an Olympic Gold, depth or not.
Too bad world cross doesn't become an Olympic winter sport.
You could add Torres, Abdi, and Meb to that list. but I haven't seen them do anything trackwise since '08.
Despite Virgin's faster PRs, I always wish we'd seen Porter and Virgin go head-to-head.
I meant head-to-head when Virgin was in his prime, not after he fell off.
