You think that if the 50k was seriously contested, an above average championship racing Italian who got lucky that the Olympic Marathon was never Kenya's favorite race would hold the world record?
Why on earth would you think that?
Geb?? runs what, like 160 mpw, and the 2:03:59 marathon is, um, "ok"
Tergat??
Khannouchi??
Kibet or Kwambai, if their once in a lifetime race had been the 50k
Wanjiru?? Kebede?? Makau??
Really, Baldini? WTF?!??!
Well, I think several of the top guys could go 4:50 pace, which is real near 2:30 flat.
If this race was to happen in April, and all the top guys were in it, I'd be on Wanjiru.

oh
they sure wanted to win it, but unfortunately somehow sent crap runners - eric "2"08 no chance" wainaina who actually got a silver in '00 ???!!!
in '04 they sent this bum & when sammy korir pulled out refused to send evans rutto or felix limo who were desperate to go
tergat got a stitch late on, but i don't see baldini having beaten rutto or limo
rutto in '04 was a monster

baldini back in the day could have run 2:05 in berlin in top shape
his half marathon pr i think is 1:01
baldini record holder? highly improbable, but not impossible
You only picked Baldini because he's white, which is a good call because the Africans don't waste their time in races with no money.

i saw him run 2"08'37 on a flat london course just 3/12 before athens
believe you me that was NO 2"05 berlin form unless he had had some serious "magical" training in the short time to athens ( which he may have had )
he had some "magical" training (with or without peds) from may until the olympics
probably london was just a bad race
he ran faster in london in 97, 02 and 03 (beating tergat), and nobody doubts that he reached his best shape at the olympics
Seko could have nailed a good one. He did the over over distance.
Haile Gebrselassie - 2:29:59

he ran 2"07 in london 4 times & twice in non global years when chasing clock was paramount & pinto's er of 2"06'36 a big target in '02/'03
conclusion is inevitable :
he was a 2"07 guy on a flat course
especially considering he ran 3 of them before athens & was an ancient 33y ole in athens
if he was in 2"05-flat-course shape in athens, then it can be suggested that brazilian was in near 2"04 shape that day, which is nonsense
i was watching that race on the main athens street : it was hot but not terrible weather for that race & 3"00 difference to a flat course at 70F was fair value
what brazilian? vanderlei?
baldini was so much stronger than him that day, stefano ran some km in like 2:4x/5x and finished the race so fresh, de lima couldnt even maintain a 3 minute pace when he was stopped.
in any case, baldini ran his pb in 2006, well past his prime
his workouts were significantly slower than in august 2004, and he still managed a sub 2:07:30
maybe you are right, but i still think than in top shape he could have run in berlin at least 2:06
He would have almost One Thousand percent won the Olympic Marathon f that nerd guy didn't shove him over on the course.
Well, it would probably be the same people who are the best at the marathon. If you are the best at 26.2 miles, you are probably the best at 31.07 miles. And the best athlete in the marathon changes monthly it seems, and also depends on the day. The record would probably be around 2:29.

who the f*** you think ??
pele ???

bullshit
brazilian complained after of significant cramps/pains after his decking to finish
he was 48s up with 10k to go
the last 10k of that race is downhill, that's the easy part
in any case, baldini ran his pb in 2006, well past his prime
err...
he was only 18/12 older...
his "prime" was 4+y before athens on his prior record
his workouts were significantly slower than in august 2004, and he still managed a sub 2:07:30
show them
maybe you are right, but i still think than in top shape he could have run in berlin at least 2:06
now we are getting down to not even top-10 in that race
It is a shame what happened to Vanderlei (the latex salesman?) from Brazil, but the fact is he was getting caught when it happened, and he was losing ground fast. Being knocked down certainly cost him the silver, but after replaying the video numerous times and looking at paces and stats it is clear that he would have been caught regardless. Everyone feels sorry for him but the gold was legit.

show the numbers
baldini was 20 seconds behind vanderlei and the gap was quickly narrowing at the time of the incident (baldini splits 2:50, vanderlei splits 3:0x)
stefano arrived 1´16" earlier running the last 10k in 28:40
the last three splits of baldini 2:47, 2:48, 2:44. de lima still running 3:0x
stefano could have gone a little bit faster, vanderlei was finished and struggling to maintain his slow pace
more info
30-35km de lima in 15:05 (1:50:09)
at 35km (before the accident) difference between de lima and baldini 28 seconds
1:52:42 time of the accident, vanderlei lost 15 seconds approx.
This was an interesting thread - how the hell did it turn into a bunch of crap about Baldini?
