That is surprising. He is a solid guy. Best of luck to him.

The original poster pasted an entire article which is some sort of copyright infraction. The article on his retirement can be found here:

Pretty sad that people don't care about this. But it's not surprising to me. There's a reason distance runners often retire early, well before their prime.
It's because he's not American and never came through an American system.

I always liked to see the Canadians run well, and he was one of my favorites.

Are you kidding me?
Reed's season best (distance to WL)
2010 - 1:46.1 (+5.1)
2009 - 1:44.2 (+2.1)
2008 - 1:43.7 (+1.0)
2007 - 1:44.0 (+0.3)
2006 - 1:43.9 (+0.8)
2005 - 1:44.8 (+1.1)
2004 - 1:44.9 (+1.8)
To me, this doesn't look like a doper who needs to get out before getting caught!
Maybe he just didn't feel that things were going in the right direction. . . .
I'll be sad to see him stop competing, but hope that he is happy in whatever's next. (And if he comes back!)
It was really inspiring to watch him race, and his near-win at Worlds is a video worth posting...

It's sad that you're posting at 2:30am.
Using his numbers from this year as a gauge are not quite accurate. He only did three competitions and hung up the spikes before the end of May. His times for that early in the season weren't that far off his times for early in other years.
He stated he wanted to use this year as a rest year. He got married before commonwealth's and took some time off. I was expecting him to use that time to come back stronger, but maybe he just enjoyed being away from the sport.
he's been slowing over the past few years, and its not like 800 runners are known for their longevity...
i'm stunned by the fact that anybody would be stunned by this news
