I am curious how many cigarette smokers we have in the letsrun community. I ran my entire childhood (4:22 mile in hs) and decided to hang up the spikes in college. Long story short, I started smoking in college and have continued now since being out for over a year. Has anyone else switched out a great habit for a bad one? I continue to run but not regularly and not competively. Any thoughts/comments? |

I former teamate of mine was a virtual chain smoker Ran 1:53, broke 4 mins and could still break 2 mins and run 2.47 marathon aged 40 . He was one of those people who seemed to be able to do anything and get away with it He even was in the beach scene in Chariots of Fire Died of lung cancer last year |

What about hand-rolled cigarettes that are not legal? Does that count in your question? If so, let me know because I have a ton of names to add then. |

Smoking is for insecure people who want to feel cool. In the process they ruin the air for everyone around them and make themselves look pathetic, inevitably dying a not so pleasant death to lung cancer. cheers boys!! |

Bill Rogers smoked a ton after college before getting serious about running and becoming one of the greatest American marathoners. Quite inspiring actually. His story helped me give up pot/social cigarette smoking. I still drink a lot though, but thats the running culture more than anything. |

Add Steve Jones to the list. Not during his 2:08 days, but still hard to believe that he could be a chain smoker and then move on to that success. Also, that Lynyrd Skinrod(sic?)guy that use to run the Tahoe Triple marathon (2:40ish first day, sub-3 next 2 days?) |

Smoking is really quite pleasant. There is no feeling quite like lighting up a cigarette on a cold winter day and pondering the cosmos while you smoke. I do not smoke, and have not since I was a teenager because of the associated detrimental health effects and high cost (you should all quit now!), but sometimes I really would like to. |

I do not smoke cigarettes but smoke weed occasionally(once or twice a month) and it has absolutly no effect on my running ability. I was an average HS runner. an Ok runner in high school, about 1620 for 3 miles and 1010 for 2 miles, 206 for the 800m. I recently ran a 1656 5k and I took a few year hiatus from running when I got into college. However, the more you smoke weed the more you do not want to do physical activity. I think smoking cigarettes on the other hand would really be detrimental to your lungs. |
