I've been gradually escalating my training over the last year after a year off due to knee surgery. I had completed about 15 marathons in the 8 years before the surgery.
I was able to reach 60 to 66 miles per week for the last three months before my 10/17/10 marathon. I never exceeded this volume while training for my previous marathons but I included more speed work.
My typical week for the most recent race:
OFF
60 min
100 min
40
120
40
120-180 min with speed(T,M and Vo2 mix)
Some of the medium long runs are run at a brisk pace on hills when the feeling is right.
480-530 min. weeks
I'm trying to be patient, changing only one training priority for each marathon cycle and I like the idea of emphasizing volume, long runs and medium long runs at high aerobic effort with a little speed once per week(I'm almost 52 and trying to minimize the risk of injury).
I work Mon to Thursday and am considering using some doubles for the first time ever on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, like this:
OFF Sunday
60
90
50
60am/60 pm
60am/40 pm
120-180 with speed
540-600 minute weeks
Will the additional hour per week, pushing me up to 80 miles, make much of a difference to a 3 hour marathoner or must I gradually add much more mileage before I see tangible results?
