Tightness/Pressure in upper abdomen 11/2/2010 1:23PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Recently I have had a tight/pressure type of feeling in my upper abdomen - midway between navel and sternum (a couple of inches below the xiphoid process). It bascially where you would be winded if you were punched in the stomach. Sometimes it feels as though it is difficult to get a full breath. When I raced recently it was really bothering me as I couldnt relax my breathing as much as normal. It gets worse the harder I am breathing, as if it wont let me get an entire breath. I dont have any past stomach issues and dont have any pain or problems with digestion.

I am 33/male who is in good condition. I have had anxiety issues in the past and recently have been under more stress than normal (work, family, etc.). Could stress/anxiety cause this sensation? Anyone else had similar symptoms?

If you haven't farted lately, maybe that's the culprit. If that's not the case, it could be a tear in your diaphragm.

Sorry for the flippant response. Just too easy to pass up. It's probably your diaphragm.

No I fart like a madman so thats not it. I didnt realize your diaphragm could tear?! That sounds pretty bad......I thought maybe it was just tight. Is that possible?

Oh im going crazy here please help. I just diagnosed myself with a hiatal hernia. But I dont get heartburn so that might not be it. Maybe a tear in the diaphragm or just stress causing a tightening sensation in the solar plexus region?

I need to figure this out soon im supposed to race this wkd.

Has anyone here had a Hiatal Hernia? What did it feel like? Symptoms? Can it effect your breathing?

Dont think its a hernia based on your symptoms. Sounds more like stress to me. You could see a doctor to make sure

I'll say it's stress. Sometimes I get weird aches on the eve of an exam, or when I'm writing a paper. Not from staying up all night or hunching over my computer screen --- it clears up soon after I get the stress-source out of the way. When I feel a little depressed, I get strange muscle cramps and chest tightness. It's curious.

Emotions can definitely manifest as physical symptoms. Try some meditation, calming breath techniques, draw a bath... Hopefully that stuff is not too lame in your book. If it is, try it anyway.

You might wanna see a doc though.

Thanks. Yeah like I said Ive had issues with anxiety in the past, and have had physical symptoms accompanying the stress - chess tightness, heart palpitations, etc. Im also in a weird time in my life where Im away (work related) from my family for 3 mos. I don't having crying episodes or anything like that, but I think its starting to wear on me.

I just wanted to see if anyone had anything similar to this. Appreciate anyone sharing

Since you have anxiety problems, I recommend this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Meditation-As-Medicine-Activate-Natural/dp/0743400658/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288840796&sr=8-1

I was anxious too before I started meditating. It's rather incredible how much it improved my outlook and overall mental health. As well as physical health.

Sure, I thought it was a little woo-woo before I started. But that feeling gets old and you embrace the benefits.

But I guess you don't fully believe it until you try it.
And go with it for at least 6 months.

Thanks for the recommendation, Ill check that book out. Im pretty open to alternative means of treating anxiety, and am of the opinion that any coping mechanism that is effective should be considered (as long as its not detrimental to one's health).

Ive tried meditating in the past but could never stick with it.....maybe I didnt try long enough
