Before reading the article I didn't know much about him except the EPO use. Now I'm glad I don't, I just want to stay away from both of them.

It's nice to hear somebody confess for a change. I don't care if he gets prize money now as long as he's clean.

ukathleticscoach, I remember the Tour of Tameside, now that you mention it. I lived in the UK from '85 to '87 (still a junior then) I did not realize Hellebuyck was the winner

Front page says he admits to using EPO in '94. Nowhere does he admit that. He admits to using EPO 2001 and onward.

fantastically written story. The journalist deserves overtime for this one.

The journalist does an excellent job walking the line of proponent for the confessing man and accuser representing the inflamed public. What a great job.

And there was so much hate on "Duke City Doper" for suggesting that "training in Albuquerque" was code for doping.

I never post on this site but saw the blog regarding Eddy. I myself am a former athlete of Eddy and while i understand some peoples feelings it is hard to hear people bash him as harsh as they have here. Eddy has wronged people no doubt but at the end of the day he has to deal with it not us...he is surely not the worst person in running history...I have extremely fond memories of eddy, and it is because of him that i am a US citizen and where i am in both my running career and personal life, i owe him a great debt for all his family has done for me. ANd Human rights violated? i have no idea what you are talking about?Eddy brought many of us into his own home or other homes he owned and we lived no different then that of college students 2 to a bedroom...Eddy did a disservice to his sport to our sport however he is not the devil...i think people need to look at their own lives and see that no one is perfect.

And Hamas gives money to help their own. We should probably forgive them, too?

I bashed Eddy on here. I had a good reason for it. He cheated. I do give him credit though for coming 'clean'. It doesn't make it right, but it does take balls to publicly admit you screwed up, especially when your kid sees it. Unlike the vast majority of dopers Eddy earned back a bit of my respect & I wish him well in the future.

Based on my read, Eddie sounded like he was a real scum bag in the 80's, 90's and 00's, cheating on his wife, running a slum lord type operation, turning a blind eye on drug cheats, and finally using EPO himself. But I tip my hat to him. He seems to have turned his life around. He's come clean with his past, and now he's using his running experience more productively, to help high school kids.

But his wife doesn't seem to get it. She worries about the effect of Eddie's confession on HER, and trots out the old "everybody was doing it" line. Her quotes:

"It's fine that Eddie feels like he needs to unburden his conscience, but it shouldn't be at our expense."

"I'm not saying the Eddie didn't make a stupid, terrible mistake, but I think it's important to point out that he is hardly the only American runner of his caliber to use drugs."

The article was fantastic.

As a second place masters finisher to Eddy at several races I can attest that I paid for some of his Hummer.

Thank goodness my rusted out car with 250,000 miles is still getting me by as I try to dig myself out of poverty.

Honestly I think that was one of the best running articles I've ever read. Reading through it invokes some different emotions from wanting to feel bad for the man to thinking he is a worthless human being. Give the man some credit for coming clean. Although she is only mentioned briefly Eddy sounds much more like an honest person over the whole ordeal than Deeja Youngquist.
