There are a lot of great places in the midwest to train. Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan have great running scenes, and lots of competitive races. Yeah, upstate New York might have nice trails, but you can't find a decent road race for the life of you. Yeah, there's Utica and a few others, but between MN and WI, you can find a highly competitive race almost any weekend of the year. The MN/WI/MI area has several elite training groups--Team USA-Minnesota, Wisconsin Runner, and Brooks Hansons of course. Plenty of parks with dirt trails to run on, too. The winter is the only downside! If I was an elite, I'd live in the midwest from April-November, then head down to the southwest for winter! Of course running when it's cold is totally doable, even when it's -40, but you can't do the same quality stuff, and the trails are all snowed-over.
