What's the practical purpose of a pickup truck as opposed to a regular car?

I'm guessing that the practical purpose of a pickup truck as opposed to a regular car is to transport material that is too large, heavy, dirty, rough or otherwise unsuitable for transport in a regular car.

Why is it that most pickups are made by Ford, eg F150,F250 etc and if you don't drive one of these with a Support Or Troops and Amercan flag sticker in some areas of USA, (where people like YEP and lets2run and company live, )you're considered unpatriotic?

Ford has the ranger & f series.

Toyota tacoma & tundra

chevy - colorado, avalanche, silverado

nissan - frontier & titan

So as you can see Ford doesn't have more models, they just sell the most. F150 has been the #1 selling vehicle for about 50 consecutive years.

Isn't that dangerous? What about the people you see riding in the back of a pickup truck? If the driver gets into an accident, they're history.

I agree. Every 2-3 years, my department leases a brand new F-150. I've never liked them...rough ride, boxy, on and on.....
