Hard to imagine doing 20x400 with approximately 35 second rest in between each. He's going to tear this season up, and hopefully his brother will get healthy soon.

solid workout. 20 quarters will get you fit!

I don't necessary disagree but would like to see him do 5x 1mile w/ 2min rest at the same pace and get through it without being on hands and knees at end
I'd like to see Jim come up with the fire to become the better twin, in everything, I love to see runners get supremely dedicated to becoming the best.
he did them in 72 or so - that's basically 5k pace for him, right? Not so spectacular if I'm right on his 5k pace.
solid, but not insane. The verzbicas workout is more impressive - multiple quarters and faster than mile pace.

I agree with this, if he was doing them in 72 seconds, I didn't click the link. I would've been able to do this workout when I was in 14:45 shape (NOT TO SAY 14:45 SHAPE FOR HIGH SCHOOL ISN'T GREAT).

i've run 40x 60 seconds at 5k pace with 20 second rests quite a few times.
the coach said it was 1/3 the rest but it was actually 1/2 the rest
Over Training, he's done
He was on a 1:45 cycle, so started another 400 every 1:45.
He ran his first few in 68-69 I believe, then settled into 70, and then finished his last two or so 67ish.
Seems like a pretty good workout. About 35 sec rest, give or take a couple seconds.
This workout is mediocre, I think I could have done it in high school while in 15:40 5k XC (hilly Midwest) shape.
bet you jogged 12:08 at VCP too right?troll

What is VCP?
Anyway, 68-70 second pace was no big deal to string together for 8 laps in a row in a race, including surges and traffic, in the lousy 90s when I ran, even more so today. Give me 35 seconds rest and I could have done this workout, as I imagine most of the 17 people who beat Jim Rosa at NXN could too, not to mention about the same number from Footlocker that year.
he wanted to hit between 72-76 so that is mid to low 15:xx pace, which for early season is close to what his fitness should be. And 8k of current or just off race pace with minimal rest is a really good workout.
hmm. i didn't know the coach was from my neck of the woods. interesting.
That is 3 minutes less total rest(665 seconds to 480 seconds). If you made it fair in terms of total rest, he'd get more like 2:45 for rest.

This is a smart workout, but not an impressive workout. I've done the same session countless times both faster and slower than this and with anywhere from 35 to 45 seconds rest and between 20 and 25 times depending on what I'm trying to accomplish. It's basically a 400m tempo workout. You're going a bit faster than tempo pace but the recovery is short. It's a tempo effort to your heart, but your legs get to feel race pace. You're teaching yourself to be able to run faster and be comfortable (not strain) while doing it.
Very smart workout, but not impressive. I'm sure this was only a moderate session at the very most for Jim.
Anyone remember the Jim Ryun high school. workouts?......Averaging 70s per 400 even wth only 35s rest is not that amazing. Just let him be a high school kid and don't put undo pressure on him. How about posting about race times, not workout times. I know some GREAT workout runners but feel no need to discuss their workouts on LR. After he runs Footlocker and is close to Luke Verzibkcikaiakdaskdss, then we can start a post about how amazing he is.
Why not Ry? wrote:

Ryun took 2 minute rests. What's yer point?
This was def a very very solid workout for a high school kid. However,I'm sure most of you have done this kind of workout......in college.
For a HS kid this was very impressive....and no one mentioned it was on grass, not a track.
So congrats to all the guys who have once been able to do this when you were in prime shape, but this post is not about you re-visiting your glory days. Its about a great workout from a hs guy.....Mid Season.
best thing about this thread is that no one is actually criticising rosa or his coach - the only debate is whether this is a 9/10ths workout or a 7/10ths workout.
Seems to be a consensus that it was a 7/10ths workout - which is a compliment to the coach, I suppose. The problem with the Flotrack WOW series is that there is no context - the Flotrack guys should ask each coach how this particular fits in - is it 7/10s or 9/10s?
Of course, few coaches would let anyone tape a 9/10ths workout - the athlete could fail or the coach looks like a burnout artist.
Great to see a top hs talent running. So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows...(like me)
