has anyone ever noticed a pebble-sized lump in her breast and it turned out to be something other than a tumor?

There is no solid evidence that mammograms save lives. In fact, research demonstrates that adding an annual mammogram to a careful physical examination of the breasts does not improve breast cancer survival rates over getting the examination alone.
Yet, most physicians continue to recommend mammograms for fear of being sued by a woman who develops breast cancer after which he did not advise her to get one. But I encourage you to think for yourself and consider safer, more effective alternatives to mammograms.
The option for breast screening that I most highly recommend is called thermography.
Thermographic breast screening is brilliantly simple. It measures the radiation of infrared heat from your body and translates this information into anatomical images. Your normal blood circulation is under the control of your autonomic nervous system, which governs your body functions.
Thermography uses no mechanical pressure or ionizing radiation, and can detect signs of breast cancer years earlier than either mammography or a physical exam.
Mammography cannot detect a tumor until after it has been growing for years and reaches a certain size. Thermography is able to detect the possibility of breast cancer much earlier, because it can image the early stages of angiogenesis (the formation of a direct supply of blood to cancer cells, which is a necessary step before they can grow into tumors of size).
To find out everything you need to know about the risks of conventional breast cancer screening (mammograms) and the benefits of thermography, please take a few minutes to read this exclusive, FREE report: The Safe Breast Cancer Screening Test Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You About.
you gotta be selling something.
did i say anything about the pros and cons of a mamogram???
well, if you think that, then disregard this info, I thought it would be helpful
Most lumps are not tumors or cancerous. See your doctor. Ignore the nut job.
my plan is to see my doctor and i really don't believe this is cancer. but, my appt isn't for another week so the creepies are settling in a bit. it would be nice to hear from other ladies who had a similar experience and found out is was a cyst or inflamed lymph node or some other random thing.

And you seriously thought that Letsrun was the place to come for compassionate, intelligent advice from similarly afflicted middle-aged women?
and you seriously think that the majority of people on letsrun are young guys?
just keep thinking that way buddy...
My wife had a lump removed in 2003 or 4. It was completely benign, but the doc wanted to take it out first and biopsy it. Not all lumps are cancer. Get it checked out, and good luck!

Actually, I think the majority of people on Letsrun are either (a)lonely, horny young guys OR (b)lonely, creepy old men.
And I'm a middle-aged female who is suggesting you check out the Susan G.Komen site for better information about breast cancer issues from other runners.
I had a cyst once, they did an ultrasound to diagnose it... it went away on it own within a few months
A few years ago, my annual mammogram showed a suspicious area. They did more detailed x-rays and an ultrasound and it turned out to be a cyst. I had follow-up ultrasounds at 6 month intervals until it went away. All mammograms since then have been normal. It's most likely not anything to be worried about but I can relate to what you're feeling as I had a few very nervous days waiting for the follow-up tests to diagnose the cyst. Good luck!

Why do us old guys have to be creepy? Why can't we just be lonely horny old men?
I do agree that letsrun.com is probably not the best place to find advice that is accurate and compassionate.
Fishy, does is the lump painful?
i had something similar and it was painful to touch. went to my doc and he said that it's just hormones and that i'm fine but i could get an ultrasound just to ease my mind, so i did and it came back fine.
it's good that you're going to your doc to get checked out.
my wife had a couple lumps removed from her breast (after fighting another type of cancer for years) and they were cysts/benign.
good luck.
The vast majority of painful lumps are benign or cystic in origin. I've also experienced several lumps in the past, all non-painful and (thankfully) all benign. Some women, like myself and other women with low BMI's, have fibrotic breasts due to a high glandular tissue to fat tissue ratio. Many doctors become overly concerned and cautious with such women. I have undergone several needless and painful needle biopsies which probably could/should have been monitored via ultrasound instead.
Could be the beginning of mastitis especially if the lump is painful
Yes (but I'm a dude). It turned out to be a fatty deposit (lipoma). No biggie.
WHY DON"T YOU GO GET IT CHECKED BY A DOCTOR AND NOT LISTEN TO THE ADVICE GIVEN BY YOUNG PIMPLE-FACED RUNNERS! AHHHHHH!
