NRR : Accounting salaries

no idea, 60K was starting for most big4 auditors in the northeast, no idea about seniors and managers. rumor was that i think managers were 90ish at the lowest, sound about right? again though this just depends on the area, NYC of course going to be the most

I'd disagree with things picking up again for accountants. At least not in the pnw. In fact the Big 4 are either laying off or delaying start dates of new hires to try and ride out the economy.

I'm a senior and making just under 60k. But, I also work and live in Oregon which has a low cost of living compared to some other areas of the country. Like NYC or LA.

Also keep in mind that you won't be making any big bucks in public accounting unless you are around long enough to make senior manager or partner. Private is the way to go, but you have to pay your dues in public for a few years.

Agreed it's horrible while you're there but private will be impressed that you were hired there

From what I heard the days of the $60k starting salary were gone.

Does anyone have any rough idea of the rough steps as you move from Staff through Senior to Manager.

Relocating to the US from Australia and expecting to come in as a senior 3 (one year before manager) and not had an offer yet.

Moving to West Coast if that helps.

Also - I think the market will start to pick up = partly because turnover in personnel is going to be far higher than usual for big 4 over the next 6-12 months as people that have been screwed over the last few years look to leave. Thats whats happening in Oz.

There is a lot more to accounting than auditing and working for the 'big 4', where your qualifications can also be used

Every medium has at least one accountant who wil be relatively well paid. Every larger company has numerous accountants along with more senior positions

I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad about themselves. I'm sorry if you feel bad about yourself, f***tard.

What I'm trying to say is that, if you have only one life to live, one career, one time, it makes no sense to play it safe by looking for an average salary as an accountant with no possible greatness. Accountants are smart, so it seems that accepting such a dull job is like folding a great hand. Human existence would be nothing without the people who took the gamble. Look beyond starting salary and there you will find greatness. Taking a great job out of college and sticking with it until retirement is the saddest thing I can see a person doing. Take a job you enjoy that pays whatever, though, and you will find that the salary rises much more quickly.

Accountants, engineers, etc.... they're all taking the safe road. Maybe it's smart, but with only one bet to make, why not make the big one? We all end up in the same place anyway. Give it a shot.

there is much more to accounting than doing taxes. it's a great foundation for all things business and fully understanding the inner-workings of business. And no, you're not a bean counter your whole life. Only if you want to be.

So if $52 to start and $62 after 4 years....raises of $2-3k a year. Seems a bit low...esp given bumps normally given for passing exam etc...

First year manager at small firm in NYC - 5 years exp - $85k...i would have throught big 4 would be more.

How long is it taking people to get to manager now anyway?

Its easy to have that mentality when you don't have to worry about the basics food, shelter, etc.

The only reason you can even have that mentality is you were born in a time and place of privilege. A privilege where you can pursue your music/art/other BS hobby.
