I know my mom and at least two of my sisters have had thyroid conditions (don't know if it was hyper or hypo-thyroid though), and I know that it can sometimes lead to weight gain. Basically since 12th grade, when I first started raising my mileage (from 30 mpw to 55 mpw and then to 65 mpw) I've been gaining weight slowly, from ~146 to 150, then to 153, and then last summer to 158. I actually stopped lifting weights after high school track finished, as I just concentrated on running more, since I thought that would help me more. So its not muscle weight, and it's not like I gained muscle from raising my mileage, cause I played tons of sports as a kid, so I don't think that's it at least.
Is hypo/hyper thyroid a condition that affects men as often as it does women? Could this be a reason for my weight gain, even though I'm probably eating less now at 85 mpw than I did at 30 mpw? Should I have it tested? Is it possible that bumping up my mileage would cause a hormonal imbalance like this? Just wondering if I should see a doctor, cause I'm really tired of watching what I eat SO stringently, despite all the mileage, and basically making myself crazy. Thanks in advance.
