Tuesday evening workout in Portland

25 years ago some locals put together a nice Fartlek workout on the Wildwood Trail in Portland.

A few years ago my HS team started doing the same workout.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, we'll be doing the Zoo Fartlek. It's reasonably challenging, and many of my runners say it's their favorite summer workout. We've had some great turnouts - kids from other schools, alums from our program and others, post-collegiates, masters runners - in the past for this workout, and it truly is a case of "the more, the merrier".

We meet at 6pm in the parking lot next to the Japanese Gardens in Washington Park. All are welcome to join us.

What kind of pace are we talking about - 4:30-4:45 range?

Yes, Central Catholic.

The loop is about 4 1/2 miles. My top group will run two loops, the first at a moderate effort - 6:45-7:00 pace on a hilly, twisty trail. The second loop has eight pick ups, designated geographically, varying from 80m to 1000m.

There will be some pretty good kids there, and likely some college guys as well - but the 2nd loop won't average any faster than about 6:00 pace.

Folks,

Don't let the pace fool you. I've done this workout dozens of times and let me tell you, it's a pretty brutal loop. I swear every "surge" section seems like it is all freakin' uphill, every time. But it's a blast and will get you strong very quickly if you keep coming back out.

Kudos to "ramxc" for carrying on the tradition of this killer workout! It was great chatting with you again at Lincoln last week. What ever happened with that kid's arm?

Mild sprain; he was back it by Friday's hill workout.
