If it wasn't official before it has to be now, Oregon it the distance running state of the U.S.
Previously there were sweeps of Oregon based athletes
Olympic Trials mens 800 and womens 10000
US Champs mens 5000 and 10000
Now there may be sweeps through spots 4 and 5.
Oregon has 2 recent major / minor TF medals and marathons, Dathan & Kara. California is the distance capital of the US with Shannon, Alysia, Meb, Deena having maj/min intl medals in recent years.

You may have to start dusting the cobwebs off some of that hardware. They've been doing fantastic, but are running more of a one hit wonder theme and without much depth. You forgot Ritz bronze just last year at the world half marathon champs. Heck Ritz ran 60:00 for the half and there are another handfull of 61 and 62 minute half guys in Oregon.
That and 13:10, 13:07, 12:58, 12:56, 12:56, 12:55, 27:31, 27:23, 27:10, 26:59, 3:53, 3:51, 3:36, 3:36, 3:36, 3:30, 1:44, 1:44. That's without doing research, there is bound to be more. And then there are the gals.
Medals are medals. Not 'coulda should woulda' talk. Small rural towns are attractive with a low cost of living. Even then because of the cheap pay parents have to support most of those elite runners in OR.
awesome situation for koll, flanagan and everyone else involved. jerry's crew is very blue collar and she will fit in well there.
Schumacher is retarded, but it's a good group and the Oregon system is working quite well.

So using the what have you done for me lately method:
Medals within the last year, Ritz 1, Rowbury 1? Seems pretty even.
You want to go back further you can add in Goucher and Flanagan.
ARs in the last year set?
Ritz and Solisnky 3, California?
Addl AR's beaten in the last year?
Rupp 2, California?
How about world champ finals made in the last year?
That's a landslide towards oregon.
I'm living here in california but not blind to what is happening. Don't feel bad all things considered, California is definitely in 2nd place and you can claim German Fernandez if it makes you feel better even though he's in oklahoma. But only until he moves to porland.
Go ahead make the list of current runners in Cali.
Compare to
Symmonds
Wheating
Centro
Acosta
Leer
Brown
Smith
Rupp
Teg
Ritz
Webb
Jager
Nelson
Bairu
Kiptoo-Biwott
Thompson (silver at euro champs)
Simpson
Koll
Goucher
Flanagan
Yoder-Begley
Fleshman
Kipyego
Come on. be serious. Only major medals count at the world level. All the fluff you list are resume prose for a coaching gig when they retire. Kara has the only major medal in recent years. To be nice, Ritz has a 1/2 mary medal. Shalane has an Oly Bronze, but was in NC then.
Don't diss Arizona and California based runners. They've brought home the bacon so we could hold our heads up high to Texas and Los Angeles sprinters and hurdlers. And don't forget pole valuter Brad Walker who lives and trains in the Pacific Northwest (Seattle) and has 2 major T&F medals.
Wake me up when any of them actually win something in international competition. And it's interesting that you ignored the one guy there that might actually win something--Solinsky.
But, Allyson Felix has SEVEN GOLD MEDALS. That's why when she competes at Mt. Sac, she's treated like a rock star. And why nobody knows or cares who any of those Oregon people are.
Compared to the people in California and Texas who actually win the medals, the Oregon people are just a bunch of international wannabes. Right now, US champ at 10000 means exactly the same thing as US champ at curling, until proven otherwise.
Now, Hold UP, Jim ! It took the whole USA to make the USA 2009 Berlin the #1 Field & Track Team in the world, again.

TX and CA won 18 out of 32 medals. That's NOT 32 out of 32. Other states won 14 medals. Give VA GA IL MS MO AZ FL KY credit for what they did for the USA at Berlin. They earned it too, and we love them as much as our own kids for just that. Those kids and their coaches can stay at my house any time they are in L.A.
Anyone else think Lisa Koll is hot?

Fair enough on Solisnky, that was just a slip while trying to recall all the others. As to Felix, when did she become a distance runner or are you not following along???
If I was going to list athletes other than distance runners, do you think there is a little somebody from the U of O might be worth mentioning? Has a little WR.

I'm not stupid. I know we're talking about distance running. I'm saying that Felix has 9 gold medals at the 10000 meters and, the last time I checked, she has the world record, 29 minutes or something like that.
