Any idea how this got started? Was it because of their run in the 1990s?

Sam Houston was exiled from Tennessee because of his personal preferences, migrated and found the Republic of Texas, and the Great State of Texas. US Navy sailors were the first to promote our Dallas Cowboy's across America and the globe. Those are our 'Boys.
From wiki:
The Cowboys began the 1977 season 8-0 before losing in consecutive weeks to the St. Louis Cardinals in a Monday night home game and the Steelers in Pittsburgh. After the losses, however, the Cowboys won their final four regular season games. In the postseason, the Cowboys routed the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings before defeating the Broncos in the Super Bowl in New Orleans. Bob Ryan, an NFL films editor, would dub the Cowboys "America's Team" following this season, a nickname that has earned derision from non-Cowboys fans but has stuck through both good times and bad. (actually, the America's Team moniker was attached to the Cowboys after the 1978 season).
Long before that. Trace it back to the late 70s.
Some claim it was what God did on the 8th day but I doubt that but we do know its his favorite team.
Its odd that Dallas got the "America's Team" name because Howard Cosmell hated the Cowboys and always refused to run the highlights during Monday Night Football UNLESS they lost the day before. Additionally, Dallas had to go play New York (I think) only two days after JFK was assassinated in Dallas. The crowd booed and Dallas was called the city of hate. NFL Commish Pete Rozell said it was the worst decision he ever made not cancelling the weekend games.
Once the Cowboys started winning, things changed.
Jerry Jones screwed up the team in the late-90s and a sucky 2000 should be made up for when the Cowboys play in the 2011 Super Bowl in Arlington, home field, a first against a surprising Houston Texans for a Texas Super Bowl.
Another reason to hate Texas. Now leave me alone the game is about to start.
The Dodgers are called "The Original America's Team" because of John Muir High School's and UCLA's Jackie Robinson who captured the attention of post-WWII America.
Here is your answer:
Of course I could do that. But, it's not as much fun as posting the question on LR and watching the smut roll in.
Because the dumbasses in Texas think everyone outside of Texas gives a crap about their dumbass teams when in fact they don't
Because the Dallas Cowboys have been a bunch of lying and cheating scumbags snce the day they were formed and if you're from Texas you think that's the American Way.
For a guy who brags about his small package you sure mouth off. Truth is, the Dallas Cowboys are the No. 1 team in the US and second only to Manchester United worldwide.I think that proves more than you dumbass claim. The world cares. You may not like but your boyfriend probably has the same frustrations with your small wood. And is Ed short for erectile dysfuntion?

Keith,
I have taken the liberty to forward your post to an acquaintance, Tom Iannotti at HP/EDS, your employer. I hope he gets as big a kick out of it when I kick your ass when you come here in a couple of days.
Not. The L.A. Fakers are the World's Team. Kobe is the #1 sports star in the world.
The cowboys are the butt jockey's team.

Since I'm actually an honest person, unlike yourself, there is no one I work with that is unaware of my distain for the Cowgirls.
Mr Iannotti is more than welcome to look me up in the directory and send me a note. Just because the people I work with built the computer infrastructure at Jerry's playland does't mean I'm going to root for some scumbags because unlike yourself, I have honor and principles.
I would day the Cowboys are justified calling themselves "America's Team" as they draw a fan base from across the country and not just their geographic region mainly Dallas and Texas. They may not have more fans but they draw from the biggest geographic region. I am a Giant fan and nearly all Giant fans have some geographical affiliaton with the NY/NJ metro area. Perhaps they grew up there or have family originally from there. I find Dallas fans in New York who have no more to do with Dallas than a New York Giant fan but they nevertheless are fans. There are several other sports teams that draw their fan bases from regions well beyond their geographical locations. The Yankees (they win the most), the Bulls (at least when MIchael Jordan played with them)Lakers (so long as Kobe plays with them), Manchester United, Bayern Munchen, Juventus, AC Milan, Real Madrid Barcelona just to name a few. I might add that even though the teams above could justify calling themselves "America's Team" or "Spain's Team" or "Germany's Team"...they do not. Only Dallas does and I think it is just a reflection of Dallas Cowboy fans being complete Douchebags.
Who the eff is Tom Iannotti ? Italians aren't white since they were slaves under the Mongol Hun Empire in 351AD. Is he American ? Somebody check his gov't birth papers.
Check Obama's birth papers.
Also, the Packers are Amerika's team. Lots of whities in Wisconsin.
I hope you are better at your job than writing.
Back in the day the cowboys were televised in most states without football teams at the time and many people became fans
