Finsihed an interval workout after that kind of effort for 4000 meters? Iam guessing strides as opposed to 200 repeats, etc...?
He has, in the past, done workouts, not strides after races. Seen it with mine eyes.
Alberto has had G.Rupp and co. doing workouts after races since high school.
It's just part of the training. It is good conditioning and good for mental focus. I liked the idea, as long as it was adjusted for how hard a given kid ran.
At the UW meet this year after he ran a 3:56/7:51 double, he did an 8 mile tempo at 5 minute pace.
hs runners take note, i was doing this 25 years ago, workouts after a race, its the best way to add a 3rd workout to your week. Mon, Wed, Sat. so instead of hitting the consession stands at the meet, go out not for just a shake out run, but a real run. benefits will pay dividends come conf. county, state x-c meets.
You mean like a threshold run? Could you be more specific?
I think the logic is that you're going to take the next few days easy for recovery, so you may as well get more out of the day's effort, especially considering how much you may or may not have tapered for the race. The #1 most important thing, though, is that you don't get injured. Make sure the workout is going to give a healthy stress and an appropriate benefit.
So high school runners, take note that you probably don't run 100 miles per week and that more after your race could be rough on your body.

Do the shake out / post race warm down first, hydrate etc. as needed, then do the workout based on how spent you are from the meet/race/races. (I often quadrupled, 4X100, 800, 400, 4X400.) Often I'd get a 90 minute rest while the bus got us back in our area, and then would tempo 5 miles back to school. Good fun.
