The only thing shocking here is how long it apparently took for Nike to get the signature on the line.
Good job hitting the big time kid, I hope you are gettin PAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDD now.

In every other professional sport, contracts are made known. Why not in Track and Field?
ENDORSEMENT contracts are not known (only a contract with the team). When you hear how much Nike is paying LeBron it is usually a guess or someone leaked it.

This is a myth what is made known is often an inflated amount that the athlete allegedly signed for, no one really knows the truth and details behind NFL, MLB etc. contracts.
In track and field, it has never been a tradition to "leak" terms of deals, in USA pro sports the details are always leaked by agents, in order to drive future salaries UP, when in fact said agents may be over stating the actual numbers...
Since the agent stands to gain by maximizing multi-year contract value, Nike can leverages that into silence. Which means essentially, the athletes sell each other out and Nike wins. A bit Prisoner's dilemma scenario, with some good old ambiguity aversion mixed in. Kalai bargaining model get's thrown on it's head. Just too much control for Nike.
In Wheating's case, Nike also gets to play the loyalty card.
And of course sense Oregon track is owned by Nike, this discourages competition for Oregon athletes upon graduation.

How much?
$350-$400K/yr
ds - you have no idea what you are talking about. There were obviously several big companies bidding for Wheating. Nike was not going to let Wheating go at any cost, let alone to another corporate sponsor. Agents and managers have dealt with more cagy outfits than NIKE. Try major leage BB, roundball and football etc.
This is great for Wheating, for NIKE and for the sport. What a great future he has. I'd love to see a list of the built in incentives in the contract and what each offers.
$600k/yr
not as much as silas kiplagat

47K per year
That's $129 American dollars per day. That ain't chicken feed people.

Kiplagat will surely get less. If they gave him $600,000 he'd retire his first year.
That's like $10,000,000 in kenya.
On top of that, there is very little marketability for Kiplagat and he has no proven track record. He's an amazing flash in the pan as of now.
Wheating is a proven consistent runner who rises to the occassion, takes pressure by the horns, continues to progress and likely has plenty of progression left.
All of these are unknowns with Kiplagat, and he's not going to help inspire many american runners to go by nike spikes or running shorts. On top of that Wheating can mix it up in two different events on the diamond league, another unknown for Kiplagat.
in other words, what you are saying is:
wheating gets more because he is white
kiplagat gets less because he is black

Is that really all you get out of what I said? Somebody help you.
Maybe if you list my points out and counter them you have an argument instead of simply some knee jerk reaction anytime two runners are discussed and they happen to have different skin color. If kenyans were actually white, would you have said the same? If nothing changed but their skin color, would you?
Why don't you address my points:
*Marketability
*Proven Consistency
*Multiple Event Ability on the Diamond League Circuit
*Ability to deal with Pressure
*Probability of Upside
Wheating is 5 stars on all accounts, where does Kiplagat stand?
The last major point is:
*Income VS Cost of Living Standard (why do you think American companies including federal goverment pay employees more who work in NYC and SF than in Spokane or Austin?) It's well known that Kenyans often quit when they feel they have enough money, so if Nike believe Kiplagat is going to be great for years to come, why would the pay him to quit early?

No. He's saying that Kenya is a poorer country than the US, which is a generally accepted fact.
OH! OK! now i see what you are saying.
what you are saying is:
wheating gets more because he is white
kiplagat gets less because he is black.
is that right?
I'm shocked..SHOCKED.
Sarcasm aside, its interesting that it says he will still run in Eugene given the level he is at. Is Symmonds training in Eugene? That would make sense if he was. Otherwise, I would have thought he would been pulled towards Portland. And is Lananna still going to coach him? I know Wheating would like that but at the end of the day Lannana is the UO coach and I'm sketical if he can give the time to Wheating.
So basically what you are saying is, you have no argument.
The OTC Elite group coached by Rowland is in Eugene, OR.
AlSal's group and Jerry's kids are up in Portland, but still wear the OTC singlets.
Wheating will have access to all the OTC Elite staff and perks in Eugene. And maybe he keeps Lanana as his personal coach since that seems to be working out fairly well...er...try f-ing GREAT!
