Going back to school for an engineering degree?

Sounds like you want to do it, so go for it.

Sounds like you haven't really looked into this yet. That's okay, everything starts somewhere.

But maybe the best thing to do is to actually figure out what would have to happen for you to do this.

-Where would you get your degree?

-What would your degree be? A master's? A second bachelor's?

Look at their policy for undergrad admissions. It's possible you don't qualify, since you already have an undergrad degree. (I would really, really advise you not to try to lie about that to get in. If you don't know why it's a bad idea, ask us.) That might put you in the position of master's or nothing. But you might be able to take undergrad classes to bring you up to the level of the people who have undergraduate engineering degrees.

Talk to someone who can help! Make contact with people in the engineering department who you might like to work with and/or with admissions people. Tell them you're considering this and ask for advice. Be polite, be respectful, be grateful that they're even giving you their valuable time to tell you they're not interested rather than just ignoring you (they get a lot of email!)--you're in business so you may have social skills. Use them.

Same situation, 27 and getting a second bachelors in engineering to go along with my ex phys BS in lieu of the ever popular and widely respected on letsrun - MS in ex phys. A year and a half in, a year and a half to go. Do it, dont view it as starting over. It's not.

I don't exactly have all the time and/or money in the world so I would most likely be studying or doing internet/night classes while still remaining employed in my current position.

And thanks for the responses. I work/live in the Columbus, OH area, so I'm leaning towards a second bachelors at Ohio State University.

My husband got his 2nd undergrad in civil engineering, a few years after getting an undergrad degree in music performance and starting a semester of grad school in the same major. He had to pull out loans in order for him to go back (he went to the local state university).

See if any of the courses you took for your business degree can carry over for your engineering degree, as this can help shorten your time in getting the 2nd degree (particularly the maths, chemistry, and physics, if you took any when you did your business degree).

You could look into a degree in industrial engineering or management, stuff dealing with the operational side. I'm sure there's some cross-over. Purdue offers a solid degree in this stuff and is not far from you.

Or, forget specializing and get a more broad-based engineering degree like applied math, especially if you like math and are very good at it.

I just graduated from OSU with an ECE degree, well worth it, my grades were not stellar, but I landed an awesome job and I love what I do, I also did a co-op during school to get experience and make some extra money. I was able to take classes MWF most quarters and working ~ 15-20 hours a week was not a big deal with 4 classes.

OSU has great Engineering programs, just get ready for alot of math/physics the first year or so. After you get through with that it's still hard but gets more interesting.

I'm guessing it's been years since you did any calculus, so it would be well worth brushing up on that stuff before you go back to school Otherwise you'll have to relearn math at the same time as taking a bunch of other courses, which will be a pain.

Funny you mention Purdue. That's where I did my undergrad! Going back is an option, but I'm leaning towards a change of scenery for my next degree.
