I remember, back in the early 80's, when i saw Stemmer thinking, that dude has guns for a distance runner. I obtained those guns, but also 50lbs to go with them. Stemmers arms were very impresive for a distance runner.
They were merely very impressive. They were completely unique in the distance running world. I remember when Pinkowski first moved out to Oregon. We went out to lunch. Pinkowski starts giggling hysterically. I'm wondering why he's laughing, and so Pin quietly mimes Stem picking up his sandwich and pointing at his biceps. Now I know what Pin was laughing at so I look at Stem and his biceps were stacked up like the Rock of Gibraltar.
Then there's the story of the Northwest Benchpress championships. Stem got 3rd - behind on guy who would have normally been 210-220, but weighed in without his two prosthetic legs! The other guy was a midget. His arms were about a foot long and all he had to do is barely move the bar and it counted as a good lift. I was besides myself. It was a circus.
