Elliot Denman is the best. No one else comes close. Dick Patrick is pretty good. Ed Grant is just A. O. K.
Elliot Denman? Is the best? Is that a joke?
Dick Patrick is fine but he'd be a lot better if USA Today would actually send him anywhere anymore
Just remember this: Some journalists truly are good people away from the job, but in my opinion there are no good journalists; just a lot of people who spread news with their own slant. But speaking of journalists, I was away for a week in late February and when I returned I noticed there were no more posts from former sports reporter Flagpole Willy. What happened?
elliot denman was a damn good writer, i wouldn't say the best, but very high up. covered every olympics from '68 to 2000, and countless international meets in between. most people never got to read his stuff because he didn't write for a national paper. as an editor he made sure track got good coverage for his paper, evidenced by the fact that it gets absolutely none now that he's retired. for a time, the best national track news you could get was by buying two jersey papers: the asbury park press and the newark star ledger.
saying there are no good journalists are like saying there are no good teachers, doctors, firefighters, computer programmers, business men, etc, just some good people with an agenda. but i'm sure your profession, joe c., is filled with top notch folks.
flagpole willy is on a self-imposed lenten ban. he will return to posting after the high holy day.
Kenny Moore and I like Douglas, too. I thought Douglas had some inspired stuff on the last page of the old Running Times. Wish I kept some of them.
Guess Kardong wouldn't count as a journalist, but he's written some funny stuff.
Actually, I am a journalist. I don't write much anymore; mostly I'm an editor. I've been in this field for all my professional life and I've become very disillusioned with what I've seen in those 20-plus years. There has been an agenda, so to speak, at every newspaper for which I've worked. And those agendas aren't all one way or the other. It's getting worse, too.
Like I said, I'm sure many of these people truly are good people away from the job, but there's something about the job that's corrupting. And again, that's my opinion, based on all I've seen and experienced in my field since I first got into it as a 14-year-old high school kid. Take it, leave it, ignore it, do whatever you want with it; I don't give a rat's ass.
Heraldo Riveras!
That dude ran while reporting and writing stories all over Iraw and what not, you see him dodging bullets? Then in the states he ran and reported while being chased by Klan Members, that dude's got some serious footspeed.
From a UK perspective, Doug Gillon (The Glasgow Herald) an David Walsh (The Sunday Times). Doug will craft a better story, Walsh is the only journalist to really confront the drugs issue.
Kenny Moore, though he hasn't written much lately.
Kenny Moore and the Kiwi, Roger Robinson.
Ian O'Riordan, Irish Times.
He can write AND run.
My nominees for the worst:
Jeff Galloway and John the Penguin Bingham. They both suck. I'll leave it to you to decide which one is the bigger suck.
Skylon,
Elliott does some writing for other papers in his "retirement." I think he's done some work recently for the Balto. Sun and I know he's done some for the NY Times. Are you down the shore??? I thought you were out west in Jersey.
Wayne
Because I am interested in journalist writings, I began looking up their info. The links below are samples of some of their writings, homepages, whatever. I wanted to keep a list for my personal future reference. Just sharing.

Kenny Moore, hands down.
If you can find his article "Concentrate on the Chrysanthemums" from SI circa 1976, about he and Frank Shorter at Fukuoka, it is beautifully done.
Kenny Moore
All others stand in line
Another vote for Kenny Moore.
John Meyer for the Denver Post writes extensively on running. The Post gives quite a bit of space for Colorado runners, way more than most metro newspapers.
I agree, the story on Shorter is AWESOME! Best piece on Shorter.
