Good grief, no wonder why people in the USA don't care about distance running.. They didn't mention Wheating's name 1 freaking time. Hello he was the top American ran a 3:51.74 !!!!

I was screaming at the TV, they kept mentioning Lagat and Manzano and they weren't in the race at all.
It's like Wheating was invisible to them..
Then to cap it all off the older announcer goes, "AND ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE A SUB-4 MINUTE Mile at Hayward Field!"
RU kidding me?!!!
They think it's 1975 on NBC. 3:50 is the new 4:00 guys. Please get up to date or get off the air.
It was pathetic, those guys are complete idiots and I'm not usually negative.
Home town college hero beating world champions, 5th in a race that returned 7 of the 10 fastest milers from last year. School record, getting close to the 3:50 barrier which wasn't broken by anyone on U.S. soil for a loooong time.
Same thing for Wright in the 800. How'd they miss it?

I bet Wheating was invisible to them because they were identifying americans by the purple singlets... I guess when you're at Hayward Field the giant O on his chest wasn't enough of a clue :(

College athletes (or fresh grads) are rarely on the broadcasters' radars. It's unfortunate. They rarely give a damn about any milestones except first place (and even then, they often completely screw up and don't mention the eventual winner until they're 2m from the line). It happens all the time when someone finishes less than first, but sets a CR or something and loses to pros.
The commentators were simply being professional. They didn't mention the 4th place finisher either and he finished waaaay ahead of Wheating. Why would a professional commentator focus on a guy in distant 5th? Because he's white? The world does not think like Letsrun.

True EXCEPT he was a 2008 OLYMPIAN at 800 meters! is is that much for them to give him some love for moving up and throwing down with the best milers in the world and he is a DUCK on his home track !
NBC = Nothing But Commercials.

Exactly, who do they think they are commentating to? Those of us in the know, already know what is going on. The average american joe who it appears they try to appeal to is much more likely to watch with intent if you can set up the race and what wheating was getting into. Tell them how much the home fans love him and how crazy they will get if he stays up in the race.

They are not usually this bad. The guy gets by far the loudest ovation all day. You don't think that the avg american watching would like to know that this is the kids last race on his home track and he breaks the school record and runs 25 yards faster than Pre of the Pre Classic ever did? Or that it is a school record? Or that he just won the NCAA 8/15 and on and on and on. The average guy and the track fans watching want to hear that. Its called good coverage for the people watching. This coverage today for the entire meet sucked. Who are the producers?

Uhhh...maybe because it was an AMERICAN broadcast by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), an AMERICAN television network. Just my wild guess as to why they should've mentioned Andrew Wheating since he was the top AMERICAN finisher running one of the fastest miles by an AMERICAN on AMERICAN soil.
surprised they didn't play up the Wheating story, as soon as he started moving up the crowd was going crazy. I was too focused on him to even look at Kiprop.

Also Oregon Soil + Oregon runner
maybe because he's an american, on an american network, being broadcast in america.

No, the average Letsrunner distance geek wants to hear that. The average American simply and rightfully does not care.
Dunce, I was at a bar watching this and gave a 5 minute speech to about 15 half drunk people about wheating during the commercials before the race. not one was a runner. they started going batshit when he was moving up. the only thing they cared about was whether he ran faster than pre. one guy gets up and goes to the bathroom and a guy says what were you guys watching? guy says kid just ran faster than pre. Beautiful. Maybe he forgets the entire race by tomorrow. But maybe he does not. I know for a fact he does not care about 1st-4th today.
so you are wrong. and a dunce.
The announcers spent 2 minutes and 15 seconds talking about the scary Bowerman Turn and if Tyson Gay could manage to survive it... Good gawd...
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
