I agree! Everyone in the field always think they have the best kick. Yeah, that worked well for everyone but the top two didn't it? Grow some balls US 1500 runners.

true (Teg knows he doesn't have the best footspeed in that field), but how many times does the guy who takes the lead early win the race? almost never. you take the lead and you are expending much more energy than those drafting off you, so it is never a winning strategy unless you are dramatically better than the field. and it was not exactly distance weather.

Stop making terrible threads.
On topic actually...I was hoping somebody like Teg who is more of a longer distance runner would try to set a strong pace and tire out Manzano and Lamong so it wouldn't come down to who can run the fastest 400 after jogging 1100 meters. But then again it is all about the win and the appearance money.
I was waiting for Stephen Pifer to do something! He should've made it honest.
pathetic. I've seen better 1500s at all comer meets
Are you retarded? There isn't appearance f***ing money at the USA championships.
High schooler Lukas Verzbicas would have kicked their asses.....and he didn't even run track this year! 1500 final was the slowest since the late 1930's-early 1940's, and those were run on cinder in leather shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

appearance money= contractual obligation
my bad
You think Teg is contractually obligated to run the 1500 at US championships? Again, you are an idiot.
Another moron (actually you are probably the same one from the 5,000 and 10,000 threads) who knows NOTHING about top level racing.
I am sorry but I do know about top level racing winning an NCAA championship. The way I did it was knowing I didn't have the best foot speed in my race and taking it from a long way out. People need to be honest with themselves and their ability and race the way that sets it up for them to win. Yes does that mean taking a risk and it may not work sure but at least you have a shot. In that race today there were only 2 guys who had a shot at the end. Until people are realistic about their abilities they will never have a shot.

Why not go out in 2:30 then? Why not just f***ing walk 1100 meters? Races like this are f***iing boring and honestly only benefit maybe 2-3 people in the field. The rest of the guys are the ones who know nothing about top level racing.
this was worse than watching the fridge box manute bol.
Where's Richie Boulet when we need him.
Did anybody notice that the JUNIOR 1500 winning time was faster than the SENIOR winning time patheitic.
exactly, slower runners should race like madmen to get wins or at least get their name out. Like I said about the 5k, somebody in that pack has to want to win bad enough to take off and hold his PR pace and give himself a shot
Lets get some perspective here.
How often does the runner that keeps it honest actually win the race? What are some examples of someone winning a major championship that way?
ALso it doesnt count win the example features a runner who is far and away the strongest runner, i.e. Hicham El Guerrouj

How many times has a mid level guy (Torrence for example) won on a kick against Olympians? Just as rare. As I said, why not just walk 1100 meters? Would that be ok for you guys? "Oh, it's tactical" Again, I have nothing against tactical races when they are done at an appropriate level. Going through 800 in 2:01-2:02 is still tactical, 2:15 is pathetic.
Does ANYONE remember Filbert Bayi from the 70's? Took it out at an insane pace and made all others toe the line. He won the Commonwealth 1500 over John Walker in the low 3:30s by going out in 50 flat and making everyone else suffer.
I have to agree with the majority of posters. This was the most pathetic race I have watched - ever.
Filbert Bayi was a WORLD RECORD holder. Not really a convincing argument that taking it out is a viable strategy for a mid level guy at US nationals.
The sad fact is that taking it out remains the classic tactical error and that tactical distance races are boring for precisely that reason.
These runners arent stupid or lazy they just know better. The best strategy for a runner that doesnt have a good kick is to hope someone else makes the mistake of keeping the race honest . Over time that is the strategy that will get slow kickers the best results.
The real solution would be to make track and field a team sport but I imagine that would create many other problems.
