13th place in the 10000 at USAs in 29:51? He's much better than this. I didn't get to watch the race. Was he just never in it? Did he go for it early and bonk? This is a guy who ran 27:48 in college.

The guy has done nothing as a pro. At least he finished this year.
Overtrained and under-raced. The Mammoth way!
I get tired of people who don't understand elite track competition. These world and national meets are very tough to run. They are so tactical, run a 63, then a 73 lap- 66- 70- kick in a 53, etc. Most of these guys don't train for these kind of races and they wear on an individual in different ways, depending on the day. Running on the track is an art for some and not for most. I think alot of these results would be different if everyone was running for time. I think a guy like Bauhs would be a stud on the roads and probably in the marathon some day.
I've seen Bauhs race both in college (at multiple NCAA's) and I was in the crowd last night watching. In college he controlled the races and would either hang out and then kick in the last mile (he did this at Cal Poly against Kirwa at 5K) or he'd take control early, but he won in different ways.
Last night Bauhs just didn't have it, he tried to go and was at the front until Moran made his move, then he started falling back and finally ran a 70 seconds lap with 12 to go and faded. He came by the stands after the race and talked to someone he knew and just kept saying I don't know what happened and looked distraught.
I understand that anything can happen in racing, but to say these guys aren't trained for this kind of racing is a joke. These guys are very fit and running a 73 then a 63 then a 70 is like a fartlek for them and shouldn't be hard for the best and isn't. It's when they squeeze down and guys like moran jump down to consistent 65's that guys get dropped.
Personally i'd like to see Bauhs go back to Gary Towne at Chico and get back to his roots, but I wish him well, as I've always been a supporter of his.
They train to run fast. There are a certain handfull of runners who have the gears to be top track athletes. I also had a friend that ran the womens 10K, and she just didnt have it as well. She will never be a 32 minute 10k runner, and should head to the roads and make some money. I remember in college my worst race was my conference 10k where we jogged for 22 laps then a kick, not my race and I got smoked! I said screw this and ran the 5k hard from the gun a few days later, made it a race and finished all-conference with one of my best races ever.
Remember Bauhs running with the Africans a few years back at the San Jose Rock n Roll Half Marathon, think he needs to move up to the longer stuff.
If I am mistaken, forgive me, but at San Jose Rock & Roll he was still living and training in Chico as was Charlie Serrano...
He has not run as well since leaving Chico. Based on his race performances he seems flat and not running as consistently. They need to tinker and adjust his training.
Most ex-college athletes run very well the first year they turn pro. They don't have to worry about school and racing a lot in the collegiate system. He seems to have gone backward with more training and less racing.
Well, first of all he was training like a pro in college. Essentially he was already fairly well conditioned but lacking 1500/3000m speed required to go to the very top in the 10000m.
Increasing the workload on general principle was a bad mistake. It's that old school Vigil mindset that real men run 20 miles/day and speed will magically appear with strength. Sometimes maybe, but oftentimes no. Truth is you'll break some bones, and worse, leave some very good kids in complete ruin. And now we have one of our brightest prospects going straight backwards, and mystified that overtraining and misdirected training would ever fail.
I hope he does a lot more than tinker.
I think that username was banned on LR, yes?
Thanks! Apparently I've never understood elite track competition before now. Until I read your post I didn't realize that most elite track athletes don't train for the sorts of races they encounter at world and national meets, or that those sorts of races are "very tough to run." You've really cleared a lot up for me!

under-raced??? he's been in every race that he's been able to get into.
you are all idiots. Bauhs will pop one within the next 6 months and everyone will be blowing their load on the boards.

This is why no one cares about T&F. Guess what the national champs was YESTERDAY he didn't have it on the big day.
Teg, Solinsky, Ritz, Med, Abdi all stay home and people complain Rupp wins too easy. No s^%t everyone ducked him. No one will care if Bauhs busts a PR at some meet overseas and comes in 14th. Guys like you think PRs matter but the point of T&F is to win races. Sport is about contests not times!!
This guy is undeserving of any attention (especially front page of letsrun) Hes a descent road runner who will struggle to even win local road races.
He's run 13:28/27:48. More than descent marks on the track I'd say.

Scotty covered all the big moves and stayed with the top guys until late in the race. Not totally surprising that he blew up spectacularly. I think he's probably in better shape than his time/place suggest.
I've personally been guilty of busting off some great workouts too close to championship meets and then running sub par. Maybe he overdid it coming in...who knows. I think he'll come around and run well this season.

Teg was there. He won his 1500 heat (the fastest one).
Does anybody know what he is doing now?
