Socon titles still on table
RE: huh? 2/13/2012 9:42AM - in reply to That has to suck Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Chelimo won't run every event at SoCon. That's not UNCG's style. They see him as a national caliber contender, so everything is a buildup to success on that level. The key to winning SoCon titles is to pick the event that Chelimo's not racing. Joey T and Katam will also be tough to beat.

Looks like App is shaping up. Taylor, Moen, Raby, Soderman and Lilley all posting great times this indoor. They wont be contending for wins if Chelimo runs but they can easily be top 3 contenders in their events. Has Lilley ever made an indoor team? Is that Soderman's first race back from being injured over a year ago? If so they are looking to prove something in two weeks. Sanford doesn't seem like they will be able to compete against western and app. Race predictions for two weeks from now?

If Stephen Hammond's was still at Western, he could beat Chelimo with no problem. Unfortunately he has just gotten old and fat. If it was a wheelchair race, my bet would be on Hammond's.

I doubt App will be top 3 in the 3k or 5k.
With Chelimo, Katam, Thompson, Hopkins, Pagonis, Kirwa, Berry, Cotter those races are gonna be crazy good. Moen could be up in the 3k but he hasn't done anything yet to suggest he's in great 3k shape.
Unless Chelimo does it I say Taylor and Moen go 1-2 in the mile again.
nobody has any idea

Its impossible to make any accurate predictions because nobody know what the hell the uncg coach will do. He proved outdoor that he doesn't really put much into the socon meet. Katam ran the 1500 and Thompson ran the 800 last year. What was the point of that? Neither scored but could have done very well in other events. There is no telling what events those uncg kids will end up running. My guess is that they won't run what most would expect them to run.

What have Moen, Soderman, Raby, or Lilly ran that could be close to considered "great"? Taylor ran 4:05 which is pretty damn good, but outside of that, none of those guys ran anything particularly impressive, especially Moen and Soderman.
Would be pretty shocked to see any of these guys besides Taylor in the top 3. Maybe Moen, but the level of competition this year is just too high.
glad to know

Good to know App has the class and integrity to keep a felon on their team just to win points at the Southern Conference meet. Purcell jumped really well. Still shouldn't be on the team though.

The entire field in the 60m was within .18 of eachother. Talk about a sticky situation!!!!

Looks like App is falling in everything this year. First cross country, now indoor's. Outdoor's starts in a few weeks. Here we go! Congrat's to Western Carolina.

App loses the meet and doesn't have a single distance victory. The only victories they did have were HJ and 60 hurdles. Frankly I'm surprised they got 2nd. Should have been beaten by Samford as well.

Indoors is a distance oriented conference, they probably will do worse outdoors.

When was the last time App didn't win a conference championship? It looks like they might not this year.
No cross country or indoors, outdoors will be tough.
Any predictions for outdoor?
Will Chelimo try the steeple? Could he do the steeple, 1500, 5000 triple? Or go for the quadruple- 10k, 5k, steeple and 1500?
Or maybe the 800, 1500, 5k triple?
Probably Not

UNCG can't win the team title, so there's no way Chelimo will do more that 2 events at SOCONs, even though he could no doubt win anything longer than 400 meters. It will be a tune-up meet for him eyeing Nats.

This is true.
The last time App didn't win a conference championship was 1998-1999! It's been well over a decade. In the past 12 years (not including this year) they have won 26 out of 36 conference championships. Pretty darn impressive.
Looks like they might be held out this year though.

Good to see ASUs felon jumping well. Maybe he can stay out of trouble long enough this season to justify keeping him on the team.
Wow!

A seventh grade female runs 2:09 in 800 at the Florida Relays placing first. 4:43 1500. This girl is faster than about 90% of the socon female runners.

What's your point?
Chelimo is a destroyer. Not saying I want him to, but imagine if he transfered to a school like Oregon or Wisconsin. Training with guys at/near his level would help him greatly. That kid is a freaking monster.

So does Kirwa have eligibility left for outdoor? We haven't mentioned his name in a while, but he is listed on the results from Stanford (14:36). Pretty interesting.

Is App gonna blow this one out? By the SoCon 'Power Rankings' it would seem so.

They've got over twice the points Western has, plus the motivation from not winning indoor or cross country. I say App wins by over 50.

It will be interesting to see what UNCG does. I would love to see Thompson fresh in the Steeple. Maybe a steeple/1500 double.
Also want to see Chelimo do the 1500/5000 double but I doubt it will happen. I think he'll pick one and run to win, or simply not run at all.

As far as the team rankings-
Western has:
100 meters: 2 of the top 8 times to App's 3
200 meters: 4 of the top 8 times to App's 4
400 meters: 6 of the top 8 times to App's 0
800 meters: 1 of the top 8 times to App's 2
1500 meters: 0 of the top 8 times to App's 1
5000: 0 of the top 8 times to App's 2
10000: 0 of the top 8 times to App's 2
110H: 4 of the top 8 times to Apps 2
400H: 4 of the top 8 times to Apps 2
Steeple: 0 of the top 8 times to Apps 2
That's 21 of the top 8 times for Western and 20 of the top 8 times for App, just in the open events obviously. I think they will be very even in the track events. It will come down to the field events, which App should do better in. They've got better jumpers and throwers. Should be a good meet either way though.
