VERY short version: OPEC put an embargo on oil after the 1973 Yom Kippur War, during which Nixon re-supplied Israel.
For many years (early to mid-1900s) the Arab states remained in control of Western oil companies. Beginning in the 1960's the Arab states increasingly took control of their valuable resource and balance of power began to shift. In October 1973, the Yom Kippur War between Isreal and several Arab states arose resulting in Egyptian control of the Sinai which had been held by Isreal since the Six Day war of 1967. In an effort to compel Isreal to return more of Arab land captured in 1967, the Arab states cut off oil shipments to the US, Japan and Western Europe in a boycott that precipitated the first great energy crisis of the 1970's. This boycott was made possible by enormous reserves of petroleum in the posession of numerous Middle Eastern countries, especially the Saudis, who were members of OPEC.
That is the why. The "how" is that American oil production peaked right around 1970. The OPEC nations knew this and knew that if the shut off oil to the US, the US could not ramp up its domestic production to replace what OPEC was supplying.
we had 2 oil crises in the 70s and had wait in long lines for gas twice. it was a pita but i could understand why. it was just after the vn war, so we were in tuned with the genocide that the us goverment did to se asia and to islam since the 40s, stealing lots of land from them. today it's the same situation that is the cause of 9-11. i don't know how much longer islam will have to bear the u.s. occupation. it's a bitch for the people over there.
Israel its hands wrapped around the throats of the US pols for an awful long time now.
Politicians are, with some noble exceptions, concerned only with their own position and perceived power and will never take on the Israel Lobby (or any other powerful lobby for that matter, even though the cost of our blind support of Israel in dollars, blood, and morality is devastating.
