Your thoughts! I cannot afford to run all the races I want to, but I see no problem with hopping in a race from the back and pulling out before the finish!

There was a near violent thread on this about 3 months ago. I don't think it is, but, I've done it a couple of times anyway. Wouldn't do it now though. If anything, just drop out a few hundred from the finish.
NO
If you are near the front and drop out, you may have a fist fight on your hands when the guys you were "racing" find you afterwards.
Of course it is OK. Don't steal drinks or get in anyone's way...but all of us runners have done it and understand why!
After getting heavely involved with several races I have seen how much work and $$ go into races...without entry fees you have no race so I say no...I have run many races as workouts and paid for the race for the competition, saftey, and food after words...you have to decide if it is worth it...if not do a hard run somewhere else or better yet volunteer...
Don't do it.
Of course NOT! If you can't afford a diddly $15-$20 entry fee, then dude get out and better yourself. Do whatever it takes legally to educate yourself and get a good paying job. If you are out of school and can't afford 15 bucks, then I do not have pity on you. Let me guess, a hard core Democrat standing in the welfare line looking for a handout because life has been unfair? Give me a break....any warm body in America can afford 15 bucks if you are not already blowing it on the wrong stuff!
Bandit is a demeaning description.
I prefer Volunteer Runner.
As one receiving no compensation = no prize money.
Dude, go make yourself useful...pick up a bag of aluminum cans along the highway and make yourself some money!
If you aren't finishing, then you aren't racing are you? Why don't you go and get a part time job, or ask your Mommy to increase your allowance.
I am unemployed, have bad luck all the time and am 25 years old. However, i kind of like not having to be tied down to a full time job like a lot of you do. Most of you seem so miserable.
Dirt Poor Runner,
No, it is NOT ok. Even if you decide it is a public street and you aren't taking any drinks, etc., etc., that's all just your rationalization for what you know is a bad thing.
At a BARE minumum, it makes the people who pay and those who volunteer their time ANGRY to see you running without a number. It is always NOT right to make people angry unnecessarily.
If you can't afford to pay, then go find a measured course somewhere and do time trials.
And, don't listen to my friend 359. Not all runners have bandited a race. I NEVER have, and I never will.
Get a job. I'm miserable but I have money. When I didn't have a job I was more miserable because I had no money.

Flagpole...sorry but I am calling you out on this one. Not even once?
This is one of the attitudes (banditing) that causes the sport to receive little to no respect. You have no right to do it and you should be arrested for theft of services if you do (it'll never happen though). Would you ask to bandit a basketball tournament cause you want to practice?
The question itself is disrespectful to all the people who work long hours to put on events. Like the poster said, pick up some freaking cans and get yourself some money if you're that poor. How do you afford shoes if you can't pay an entry? Do you run naked?

That's very noble of you. Not everyone decides right and wrong with the same results. People make me angry unnecessarily everyday. However, that is their right as long as they are not breaking any laws. Bandits might be cheap and annoying, however they aren't doing anything "bad".

359 - Yes, I have NEVER done that, and I've run TONS of races - paid for them all.
Surprise!,
You're wrong. It's stealing. The road would NOT be closed to traffic or monitored for traffic if the race weren't going on. No good. It's bad. Getting a free ride when it isn't deserved.
Just because someone can ratonalize a wrong act to make it right in their eyes does not make it "right"...like that one poster said does it make it "right" to jump on the field at the super bowl so you can practice your field goals...no they would haul you away...that should be the attitude about racing as well...
