The first time I ran the 400 when I was 10 was a 68, and I am a girl.
By the age of 14, I ran a high 54.
It really depends on what kind of training he has been doing.

ok im an 8th grade track runner and i have never lost a race in 400 running about a 60 second time, ive ran at state competitions and have college scouts watching me, a 106 is a fairly good time, but people who are saying you should be running a 53 are rediculous thts completely unreasonable to expect
0/10
8th grade, you should definitely be at or under 60 to be respectable, especially if you focus on that event.
1:06 is a good time. Im 13 and I can run it in 1:07 and the fastest ever in my school for a 13 year old boy is 55. so your son is at a good start, just make him keep practicing!

66 in practice is a great time!
Middle School is a strange stage. When I was in the 8th grade I started out running the 400 like a distance race, more like I run the first lap of an 800 now, i finally got the hang of it and started getting faster.
From my own experience, I ran around 60 for most of my 8th grade year and almost always placed in the top 3, the last meet of the season I hit 54 (from 60 to 54!) and completely destroyed every kid in my district by 4-5 seconds, I was told by the starter that that was the fastest time he'd seen by someone my age in his 30 years of shooting the gun.
66 is decent for an untrained 8th grader. I would assume that with a bit of training, a pair of spikes, and some race day adrenaline, he could break 60. And sub-60 for a 14 year old ain't bad. Not outstanding, but decent. I think a sub-55 at his age would be very good.

Unless you are Alyson Felix then that is a damn lie. Heck even if you were Alyson Felix I would be skeptical!

Most 9th grade boys, can run (400) meters in 53 seconds easy!!
This is NOT true! Generally, the best of the 9th graders who go out for track can run this but it is FAR from average. I maintain that an average time for a 14 year old who has gone out for track and trained like an average kid trains is more like 58 to 60 seconds. For someone who doesn't train and prepare for the race like they do in track, you could expect 63 to 65 unless they are soccer players ...they usually are pretty fit from soccer and all the running required

Sounds about right.
My Freshman 4x4 usually won or got second in our local invite Frosh 4x4 with around 3:40. Having a bunch of Frosh at 55 is awesome and rare. I had a 14 yo open his first time trial in 68 his Freshman year, he ended up a multi time state champion and then collegiate All American. Not that this would happen for everyone but I love seeing kids drop a mid 60s 400 first thing. Problem is when they think they are actually sprinters with that time.
well i am a 7th grade girl and i ran a 400m dash in 1:00.13
my coach thought it was pretty good considering the fact that i won first place in the city finals. i think its a pretty decent time for an 8th grade boy. but i think i better time would be around 1:03 to 1:00 flat
As a white, not so physically mature 8th grader I ran 58.5 (and I was one of the distance guys).
If he runs middle school track, he'll get in a race with some really fast kids who's four years older and crawl to sub-60, and probably continue to improve in every race since middle school kids are just learning to race.

I, am not, sure if you are, right.
At our USATF local Championship it took sub 55 to make the 400 final for 13-14B.
Average in the prelim of 30-ish kids was about 57
So, no, most 9th graders cannot "easily" run 53. But some can.

Most ninth graders sit on the couch and play video games all day. They haven't seen their toes in years and are incapable of running a 400 without stopping for a twinkie.
Jr high and Fr/So year of HS are hard to tell. Some kids mature earlier. Others later.
The guy who won conference in 8th grade with a 2:15/4:59 never qualified for state in track in HS and was the high school's 6/7th guy every year.
I'm pretty sure my first 400 was a 74 in 7th grade (13). 10 years later, I can put together 12.5 of those. Maturity does wonders.
