I'm a high school junior, and I'm planning on applying to the U of O next year. What it would take to get in?
Here are my grades throughout high school (weighted):
9th grade- 3.333
10th grade- 3.1
11th grade- 4.0 (although 2nd semester is not yet over, I'm hoping I will maintain my 4.0, as my grades are pretty solid right now.)
My best SAT score is 2210.
As for extracurriculars, I'm on varsity track and XC and I'm team captain. I'm also the treasurer of a small community service club at my school. I've completed about 150 hours of community service.
How are my chances of getting in next year?
Oh, and for the record I'm not an Oregon resident (I'm from California), so I'm not sure how this will affect my chances of getting in.
Why would you go a some mediocre school like the U of O when you could get into many of the top academic schools in the country with your background? You could apply to private schools as SAFETIES if you want to (this isn't a jab at public schools--private schools often have better financial aid because of large endowments and smaller student populations). My 2250 on the SAT got me a letter from University of Portland (private school, slightly more selective than U of O) saying I was pretty much guaranteed to get in if I applied. My HS GPA was ~3.7 or 3.8 unweighted. It seems to me like you are going to look pretty good on college apps, and a lot of schools will probably offer academic scholarships. Also, TAKE THE PSAT IN TIME TO GET ENTERED IN THE NATIONAL MERIT COMPETITION. The actual National Merit scholarship is pretty small, but many schools offer significant extra scholarship money to Finalists and Semi-Finalists. I don't think the U of O has great academic scholarships, and I know they have severe housing issues, even for first-years. Even convenient off-campus housing can be tough to find.
In short, I think you should only go to the U of O if you absolutely fall in love with the school when you visit. You are lucky enough to be able to choose out of hundreds of colleges that will accept you. Make the most of this opportunity and choose a school where you will be able to run on the team and where you will have lots of friends and be able to study what you want to study. Whether that's the U of O or a different school is up to you, but you should definitely do some research and and visit schools before you decide.
