4 at a time 3 times daily
Second the 800 mg (4 200 mg pills) 3xdaily. Also, you might want to take it with food when you go for 4 at a time. That much ibuprofin can really mess with the GI system.
I visited a doctor who laughed at me when I told her I was doing 3x400mg for some injury. She said minimum 3x600 and 3x800 for a short (1-2 week) time was ok. I have since had confirmation from other docs, who stressed not taking ibu steadily for much more than 2 weeks.
I have also been told 2,400 mg/day (800mg 3x/day) for a therapeutic effect.
The maximum safe dosage of Motrin is 4 X 800 mg daily, in otherwise healthy individuals. Can't anyone read anymore. It's best to take the bigger pills when you do this (prescription) because the stomach protection is somewhat better. Several days of this is OK for most, but there are always exceptions...
Outside the parameters of your question, but long-term, persistent use of any and all NSAIDs (ibu, acet, aspirin, naprox) may significantly increase male odds of hearing loss, most esp. over age 45. Acetaminophen was worst (and has bad interactions w/alcohol as well), aspirin the least bad.
If by read you are referring to what it says on the insert then then you are wrong. That advice is the non-prescription dose for pain relief. If you want any therapeutic anti-inflammatory effect then you must take a significantly higher dosage then the recommended non-prescription dosages.

You are treating the symptom. Get off the ibuprofen and treat the cause, whatever it may be.
so when I am really sore and take two ibuprofen, am I basically just taking a placebo?
your body becomes immune to them as time goes on...eventually you will need something else...its very bad for your liver to take a lot so be careful
Something I've read in a medical dictionary some time ago...
An adequate dose of ibuproten for inflammation will be higher than the adequate does for pain. When I had achilles tendonitis some years ago I did 4x800m as that what was listed a the highest short term safe dosage.
Still...treat the cause, not the symptom.

No you are not taking a placebo. It masks the pain and can even reduce inflammation. But it's still not fixing the problem. It's just masking it The pain and inflammation are there for a reason.
Something is causing the problem in the first place. Treat that. Don't mask it.
old thread but relevant for me right now. went to doc for peroneal tendonitis. It's been a month and no running. wanted a referral to podiatry since my achilles is also sore so i wondered if maybe it might be more than just peroneal tendonitis and i really want a diagnosis. Was told to ice (cause i never thought of that before!) do some exercises on a piece of paper (that i've been doing for 1+ months) and start taking 400mg IBU 3x per day for 3-5 days and got a referral to PT - standard HMO.
I want to fix the problem vs taking IBU but i also understand that things cannot heal when they are chronically inflamed. So i'm game to try it. Short story, my peronal feels less sore when walking but i feel like i'm going to explode. my heart is kind of racy and i'm tense.
anyone experience this when on IBU? doesn't 3 x 400mg sound like too much?

Pretty sure the cause is running.
So stop running.
Short term is KEY. I have compromised kidney function due to excessive long-term use of NSAIDs. Don't make the mistake I made.
Be careful with this stuff. If you take it and continue to run, eventually your body will adjust so that it will only function when you're taking the stuff. In high school, I was taking 2 (unknown mg) before practice everyday for about three months to deal with some aches and pains. I couldn't run without the stuff, even though it gave me rubber legs. I don't know if it was placebo or not, but that stuff can be dangerous long term. I only take about 2 or 3 doses a year, usually when I get really bad and know it's only an overnight thing.
Where it says "not more than 8 tablets (or 12 or whatever) per day"... that is prescription strength.
I have had prescriptions for 800mg tablets to take as needed for pain, but not more than 3x.
thanks guys. I want to do PT but every time i start doing some exercises, it gets worse.
I've had success with NSAIDS in the past for tendonitis. i only plan to take this for 5 days. but i think 1200 mgs is too much and i'm cutting back. it's making me feel really amped. i haven't run in 3 weeks. I don't plan to even try until i can walk without feeling it.
i know that when you first start IBU, you are just getting a pain killing effect and it's after time that you get the actual anti-inflammation effect. anyone know how long this is supposed to be?
