Golly gee, I wonder why people don't like running, we limit 'real' runners to about .05% of the population, derrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Some revisions:

20 + We will all get there one day, so best not to judge

15-16: win state or just about any road 5k. Maybe now when, I was running you would have to go sub 15 to win even local road races

13-14: national record holders, professionals. Painting with a bit of a bit of a broad brush as 13:30 + is not going to make you a living unless you are very lucky

Sub 13:
A lot more than 20!

I know young people (30s-40s) who run 4, 5, 6 times a week, 5-10 miles a day, sometimes more, and can't sniff 20:00 for a 5k. They've been doing this for about 5-10 years and maintain their 7-7:30 pace 5ks. Run more you say? Not all people have bodies that are meant to run. Most of these people have tried running more days a week or more often but just end up with PF, achilles issues, knee issues, etc.

how many highschoolers run sub 15? 2 or 3? jim rosa, lukas verzbicas, and craig lutz can?

sub 16 is elite in highschool.

Obviously sub 15 is even better, but so few can actually do it that saying "14-15 is elite for most high schoolers" makes it sound like 14's are a much more common occurrence than they actually are.
elite..?

are we talking 5k XC or track, there is a pretty big difference. In HS I never ran on a really fast course in XC mostly due to hills or weather, so my PR was 16:15, yet I ran 9:29 in track, I'm sure I could have approached 15:30's on the track..

I think the better comparison would be to look at how many HS guys ran whatever a 14:59 equiv for 2 miles would be... maybe like 9:05? counting 32 and 2mi times there were like 60 performances right around there.

14-15 is not the most elite college runners and surely not pros. A 13:01 guy and a 13:59 guy should not be discussed in the same sentence. Your ratings are f***ing stupid.

According to athletic.net, 726 guys ran faster than 15:00 for 5000M in 2009. So a 15:00 will pick you in the top 15% of college runners on a list of 4899. There are more runners than this number who run in college though.

60 ran faster than 14:00 (top1.2%)

As for 14-15 including professionals...thats OK to say if you count prize money in road races. If you can near 14 you can certainly win some money on the roads. But you can't live on it?

I think it's accurate to claim that 13-14 are where most national recorders & pros are running.

This claim goes to far:
20+: not worth talking about. old people, fat people, woman, etc

Roughly, half of runners in road races do not go faster than 25:00. 21:00 will get you in the top 16%. I think that's respectable?

also, what is the difference between mediocre 19-20 hs kids and average 18-19.

and i would wager a large sum of money that the average hs 5k time is above 19. remember to factor in freshman and big teams with kids running 22-24 minute times like we had.

I think you should break it down in 30 sec blocks rather than minutes. That will help clear some things up. Like I agree a low 16 for 5k is elite for hs, BUT I don't see a 16:59 as elite in hs. Also a 13-13:30 guy is professional, but a 13:30-14 guy isn't.

And 20+ being not worth talking about is pretty harsh. Many guys in hs run 20+ and I think someone stated that over 50% of the male population in their prime won't break 25. With age, we will all have to admit to running 20+ for a 5k one day.

A 13:30-14 guy is definitely professional caliber. A sub 14:30 is definitely very elite college. Out of all the divisions (including D1) sub 14:30 is VERY elite taking into account how many athletes in the NCAA run the 5000m.

So if Luke P. graduated college right now with a 13:47? 5k pr... Nike would sign him? I don't think so. It takes about a 13:30 or less to get a contract these days. I went to college in the 90's with a guy who had a pr of 13:58 and there was no thought at all in regards to if he was capable of being a professional post college. He knew he wasn't.
