Many dentists these days are trying to be better about the lecture/scold thing. I just went back after a 5 year break, new dentist, just mentioned that I should know better, then he was fine. But yeah, like others said, it will be messy. |

Probably a mouth full of cavities...I hope you have good insurance. They'll probably find something amiss even if you don't feel any pain right now. ALSO you'll probably be informed that you need to get your wisdom teeth yanked soonish; most people have that procedure done before age 20. Good luck my friend. |

I recently went to the dentist after not going for 6 years. All that really happened was I got a couple "6 years! you should go more often." Other than that, no cavities, no real problems, minimal gum bleeding. The only thing that was kind of annoying was that because it was the first time in a long time they didn't have any records so it took forever because they had to do xrays, then go through and look at and talk about every tooth (talking about things I didn't even understand, like how much it comes out, how worn down the sides are, all this stuff and they had numbers, but it didn't result in any thing). |

I just went after a 20 year break (40 now, last visited to get my wisdom teeth out at 20). I brush once a day (mostly) and have flossed once or twice in that 20 years. When I told them my history they said this could be bad. Then they looked. They did a cleaning (that took awhile). The conclusion is that my teeth are fine. They said come back in a year. A little fluoride and good genes go a long way. |

I once went ten years without going to a dentist. I got my teeth cleand and had no cavities. I went home afterward and went again in about three years. |

This happened to me at about your age, I went in and the gal cleaning my teeth ripped and shredded my gums, the whole while cursing under her breath -- she was hot -- but clearly had mental issues. --It wasn't far from that scene in The Marathon Man. So, I never went back to that dentist again. My next dentist, I told them what happened at the last dentist and told them that that bad experience made me wait longer to come in for another cleaning, and that I wanted and expected them to assign me to someone who would take their time and be gentle etc. And they provided just that a person who was gentle and kind, and thorough and did not rip the shit out of my mouth. The Take Away Message: SET EXPECTATIONS UP FRONT, remind them it has been ten years, and that you Expect them to be GENTLE -- so if they need to plan extra time, to do so. |

If you haven't done anything for that long, its going to hurt like hell anyway. I don't really have good gum genes, so I have to floss every 4-5 weeks or so or else I will get bloody. Probably best to ease into it and get in some self-flossing before you go in. They should just knock people out with gas if their gums are that bad. |

You should expect a very happy dentist. He's going to make a killing on you. Probably a new BMW in his near future. |

That's pretty insane (and disgusting). You must be from Alabama. Had a long period between visits like that myself when I was a student with no dental insurance and no income. But looking back, I don't know what was wrong with me. It's not more than about 80 bucks for a cleaning - easily worth it no matter how poor you are. I'm from Alabama, but there are not a lot of dentists per capita there - that's one reason I left. |

Dental care in the U.S. is a major RIP OFF. Unless you have gum disease, floss and brush daily with a flouride and tartar control toothpaste, you can skip your annual bullshit visit to have your teeth scraped. Take care of your teeth and you'll never have to visit the dentist until somebody kicks you in the face. |

I go every three months (gum problems). Every single time the hygienist asks in that perky annoying tone, "Have you been flossing?" I always want to say, "Yes. Have you been working out?" |

Deep Scaling. Sounds worse than it really is. They'll numb you and then proceed to scrape the hardened plaque from under your gum line. The build-up there over time creates a hard calculus that can irritate the gums causing them to recede and promote infection. Typically they'll do you in quadrants (two at a time), so you'll go in twice. You may have some bleeding and soreness, but some warm salt water rinses and a few days clear things up. After that, floss well and use a Sonicare! Sonicare....get one. |

I forgot to go to the dentist for about 10 years around when I was in college. I wasn't the best with my dental hygiene at that time either. I ended up having 11 cavities that needed filling, and had not dental coverage. Luckily for me, I lived in a city where there was a dental school and finals time was coming up. Instead of having to pay for my fillings, I actually got paid to get fillings. One of the students messed up a bit, but an instructor came in and fixed everything up. Since that time I've brushed daily (recently started brushing twice per day), and flossed 5-7 times per week, and haven't had any cavities in the 10 years since. I did have one filling fall out, and another tooth break. Those might have had something to do with getting fillings from the dental school, but I'm in a much better position to pay for dental work now, so I don't regret it at all. |
