Video?
Are people surprised when the Humpback Whale has a humpback? Something to think about.
That sucks. Imagine watching that...or explaining it to your kids.
He must have heard that only the dolphins were being awarded a special status.
What do you expect? You incarcerate a KILLER WHALE, and then are suprised when it acts according to its instincts. Yet another reason why zoos, aquatic or otherwise, suck.
F*** YOU WHALE!!!!
Yeah, Whale!!!
Fight the power.
Killer whales typically disregard people - they are called killer whales because they kill other whales (well, some do). Orcas are weird in that some pods are exclusively fish eaters and have no idea what to do with animals like seals (and would starve if that is all they had) while others are exclusively mammal eaters and disregard fish. The two types do not interact or mate, but can have overlapping ranges. I believe they only train the fish eating types.
These things are ruthless to other whales. I have seen footage of them spending hours killing a grey whale just to eat out its tongue and leave the rest. Also lots of good footage on Youtube of them playing catch with seals (and then returning them to the beach unhurt). In another instance a group knocks a seal off an ice flow by generating a giant bow wave while another waits on the other side to pluck it off (then they decide to deposit it back on the ice). Very weird animals.
There was a nice program on TV a week or two ago showing a killer whale chewing up a great white shark.
They are not whales at all, they are in the dolphin family.
There are two basic types, 'transients' who are more wild-like and chase seals even on to a beach if they have to, etc. And there are 'residents', these eat more in the way of fish and behave a little more domesticated-like. They are highly social and have complex hierarchies in their families and pods.
Killer Whale is not the proper name. That term is not used anywhere except by the press who do no research before committing an article. They are orcas - they can mistake a person for a play-thing, when they are played with in captivity.

I saw that, great program.
They got the name "killer whale" because taking man out of the equation, they are the top of the food chain in the ocean. Seeing footage of them attacking great whites is amazing.
They are fascinating creatures. Each pod forms its own developed language which is not understandable from the languages of other pods.
It's not surprising that incidents like this occur from time to time in captivity, but it bothers me that these sensationalized media stories do not portray orcas in a favorable light. There has not been a single documented orca attack on a human in the wild.
Orcas are very picky eaters, and we aren't on the menu.
As far as "Killer Whale", pretty much no one called them anything else until the'80's. Even then they had a less misleading name than say, flying squirrels or prairie dogs, which to this day have no decent "upgraded" popular name.
Guns don't kill people. Whales kill people!
This Orca has killed two other people before this. How many times does it take before someone catches on that it has a problem with people?
Any fool can see that killer whales are in the panda family. And/or zebras.
A killer whale has killed.
I'm not sure why you are surprised.
I say we give animal rights more rights and give them the right to be put on trial for crimes against others
Let's hope it doesn't come to this...
