800m Start Track Measurement 2/21/2010 7:19PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Hi, need help to settle a bet.

Do the 800m start markings take into account the tangent run from the breakline?

(ie. I believe they do, and so the 800m start lines are NOT staggered the same distances as the 200m starts).

Surely it must be this way, or the outside lanes would be running further than the inside, right ?

cheers

Either start at the 200 start lines and break after the first turn (the 1500m start line), or start at the curved 1600/3200 start line and break immediately.
Another Option.

For a two turn stagger, I believe the 800m runners start at the 400m start lines (two turn stagger). The difference in the tangent distances can be corrected by having the break line for the 800 before the end of the curve. You would have to look at the particular track to know if they do this, but I don't think they have separate start lines for the 400m and the 800m when it's run with a 2-turn stagger.

You are correct, if it is done right. Our track is IAAF certified and has the capability to run reverse 200m. The starting lines are the same/very close in lanes 1-2 but move farther apart each lane you move out.

The one turn stagger (800 meter start) takes into account the diagonal (tangent) from the breakline to the 200 meter start in lane 1. A 200 meter run from the common start/finish line would only be accurate in lane 1.
On a IAAF Standard 400 meter track with 1.22 meter wide lanes the following are the lane differential reductions:
Lane 1 0.000 meters
Lane 2 0.007 meters
Lane 3 0.032 meters
Lane 4 0.074 meters
Lane 5 0.134 meters
Lane 6 0.211 meters
Lane 7 0.304 meters
Lane 8 0.415 meters
