Why is Toyota getting all of this attention yet Ford and GM have massive recalls every year and you never hear about a congressional hearing on the matter

Please provide proof of massive recalls with Ford and GM each year. If they involve safety issues it would be even better.
If you reference the Ford Explorer/Firestone recall remember it was 10 years ago.
Ford and GM have not built a brand around their quality while pointing out the quality flaws of others. You reap what you sow.

"please provide proof" of Toyota pointing out quality flaws of Ford/GM.
You got me - a poor statement I am not prepared to back up.

The Ford/Firestone recall generated far more press coverage than the current Toyota recall (so far), so your fundamental premise is flawed.
Here's one article from that incident:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=95685&page=1It has got to be the pressure applied to the NTSB to act. GM is now owned by the taxpayers and we want a ROI. Sales are dropping. So the govt NOW applies pressure to the NTSB to do something about the failure reported by State Farm Insurance in 2007. Toyota is crushed when their sales drop. GM sales increase. O says look what I did! Labor unions happy because they can get back to work, they give O more campaign contributions. O is happy. Ford is not a player in your question, only a lucky bystander. Because they did not take handout money they will get hit next with a recall.
stop being ridiculous. If this were happening to GM right now, there would be a media circus and a shit storm on capital hill.
toyota royally screwed themselves. I own and really like my toyota, but am hopeful that ford keeps improving so that I have a good domestic alternative next time.
Wow, you've got this wrong on a number of levels and I'm tired of hearing this argument. First of all, the NTSB does not act as the reporting agency for vehicle defects (be it manufacturer, design, or warning), nor do they oversee recalls. NHTSA does one kind of testing (the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety performs similar, but not the same forms of testing), and it is the agency responsible for investigating and monitoring automotive recalls.
Next, Toyota has been jerking around NHTSA for close to three years on one singular issue. The problem is unwanted acceleration and Toyota has tried to take care of the simplest and cheapest remedies first, before confronting the most expensive problems. They first blamed the all weather floor mats (where they actually inferred that the dealer and the customers were installing and driving incorrectly), now they're manually grinding down the gas pedal and installing a 2" piece of metal into the gas pedal control arm mechanism. This, many independent sources claim, is just icing on the cake because the real problem seems to be electronic. The Prius recall is a PR move as they actually have no legal responsibility or NHTSA mandate to recall. The slow braking in the Prius' still meets all US mandates and regulations.
Now with all of this, what do you think Ray LaHood is feeling? I don't think he's taking advantage of this massive design blunder to prop up any other interests besides his own. He's pissed off at Toyota, and that's all there is to it. I don't necessarily like LaHood or his tactics, but this crazy theory that Toyota's bad reputation will actually force Americans to buy GM and Chrysler cars is insane and lacks logic. If this were the case, they'd be raking Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Ford, etc. through the mud as well.
The bottom line (which no one is talking about) is that a Toyota with faulty brakes or a faulty gas pedal is still far superior to ANY Ford/GM product.

I know in the back of my mind that's what I'm thinking too. As long as that thing starts and can move from point A to B with a gimp in one tire and screeching and belching but haven't stranded me. That's the only quality I care about in this economy.

what do you base your opinion on? ford is clearly catching up on quality. do a little research.
Nice try you lying Jap. Keep your friggin imports.

Simple. Deep down, we all are sick of the bad economic news and want a reason to buy American. Conscious or unconscious.
USA! USA! USA!
