I've seen a lot of people on these boards get scolded for referring to a 5,000m on the track as a "5k". The scolders write, "It's not a turkey trot. If it's on the track it's '5,000m'."
Well, now we know the American record holder called it a 5k, too. So from now on, unless Lagat wants to rescind his comment, you're all allowed to refer to 5,000m on the track as 5k.

That refers to outdoor track only. With indoor track the 5000m race can be called "5k". It's confusing, I know.
I didn't even know this was an issue. Doesn't the K stand for thousand. So 5K means 5,000, right? What am I missing?

K is for kilometer.
It implies a greater margin of error to measure in kilometers vs meters hence 5K is not as accurate a 5,000 meters. 500,000 centimeters would be even more exact.
Road races, even certified ones, aren't the same exact distance. There are always different tangents and curves involved.
But 5,000 m on the track is always the same.

I had never heard of this, but that is one of the most moronic things I've ever heard. Does 5k not stand for 5000? As in 5000m? The 'k' is there to replace all those zeroes. Why should we call it "five thousand meters" every time? That's ridiculous.

I've been an Oregon fan forever and never had a problem calling it a 5k. In fact, we don't run the 3200 so we always called our longest track race the "3k". So either way I think is fine because I know oregon folks that call it the "3000" also.
