Yes he is. While he is very old school, he has done a great deal for track in CT. First he was an outstanding coach at New Britian and then he started his timing business. He started the hept/ decath/ hammer and steeple and made them state events. He got a great track facility built in New Britian and he was cutting edge of technology in timing. He is very ill right now and our prayers should be with him. He may be very loud and gruff, but he spent his entire life trying to help others.

Hope this thread doesn't get deleted. A lot of high school coaches say this guy Irv Black or whatever his name is is so damn mad all the time.
Maybe his blood pressure got up too high at the CT state XC meet?

I've heard a lot about him throughout the years, but don't think I've ever meet him or at least not formally. I hadn't known about him being the one to implement the post state events you mention (hept/decath/SC/hammer) and I've always thought that Connecticut was really cool for having state championships separate from the state meets in those events.
I know there's also the Irv Black Invite formerly known as the Trinity Invite at Trinity College every April, but I think that was renamed in honor of him.

He has a history of being a toolbag...there are instances where there is an error in timing and he refuses to look at it....one of the kids from my school got screwed because he messed up and had an athlete finishing who really had a lap left....when approached he had a fit and it took the meet director to force him to even take a look at it....

ROFL i think he only likes you if you race with a conservative 1950s style crew cut clean-cut shaven with your hair parted to the side. Any other style and you're screwed. If your hair styling is long with a headband or if you have a more modern haircut such as having it spiked with gel and/or you're wearing an earing stud, he finds a reason to go rip-sh*t on you.
Some parents think he should be charged with verbal assault. I have no idea why anything would be named after this clown.

I like how all these people who have never interacted with him are hating on him. You're talking about a guy who has done the timing at a number of Olympic games, was considered one of the best high school coaches in the state when he was at New Britain, and knows an absurd amount about all things track and field, particularly the throws. I can guarantee that any track coach of worth in CT knows who Irv is and wishes him the best. Add to the fact that he coached at Trinity and is great friends with the head coach there, then yes, he gets a track meet named after him. From what I was told, the records at New Britain when he coached there would rival the records at a lot of colleges. Final word of advice: get your head out of your ass and stop talking shit about someone you don't know.
