I noticed Verzbicas had a big back kick, landed right on his upper forefoot and had a long stride similar to the stride I've seen on East Africans, while the American youth had varied strides. How does one get a stride like this?

The kid is built to run. Watch the video when he goes 14:18 indoors. Like a metronome.
I do agree - while watching him lead, couldn't help but notice that it was such a gorgeous stride. To answer your question - flexibility is key.
Nice puddle jump there too. Kid could kill the steeple
Thats why i base my training around yoga. it's by far helped me more then mileage or a concerned effort to learn the correct motor patterns.
Agreed on the flexibility is key. I noticed my stride had improved tremendously when i started doing martial arts. My instructor would kill us on stretches. when xc started i felt great and everyone commented on how smooth i looked. I almost broke 19 this year!!
one of the smoothest, most efficient strides I've seen. Very nice to watch. And he seems to have much more in the tank. Quite cool strategist as well. Hard to find any flaws with this guy. Very promising future for him.
How do you get - I'm guessin you have the right parents. I'm also betting he's run like that for a very long time.

I couldn't agree more with you. He kept looking around to see if he had to push more. That triathlete training gave him a great base of strength. I hope he makes the choice to focus on running.
It's too bad that efficiency can only be measured in a lab.
It has been found that elite distance runners tend to be less flexible than the average.
Watching him I was reminded of one Craig Virgin.
Really? Any clips out there we can watch? I've watched Virgin run, and from my memory I don't think he had anywhere near the gazelle-like stride that Verzbicas has. The latter has one of the most graceful, fluid and powerful strides I've ever seen. His heel clips his butt, he lands lightly, and his stride length looks impressive. If you watch the video of the closing 30 seconds or so where you've got the camera right in front of him, there seems to be almost cross-motion in his body.
Or perhaps I was thinking of Porter. ;)
Now that's more like it. Yeah, Porter had the same kind of picturesque stride.

I think the kid is all class, and the interview just proves it. Even points out that he is Junior age.
Lukas is good looking :)
One of the best looking since Ritz :)
I think his smoothness Kind of resembles Lasse Viren. Its Scary how talented this kid is
So its all flexibility or is there a way to practice for a stride like that? He was simply floating...
