I'm not trying to "turn" people one way or another, but as a long time vegan, and near lifelong vegetarian I think I can offer some little tidbits of advice and knowledge.
-As long as you eat enough calories, and whole foods, there is no reason to worry about being deficient in protein, fat, or any other nutrient.
-Though I understand why most people cut out flesh, and not other animal products, I honestly believe it's healthier(and more natural) to eat ZERO dairy, and small amounts of meat.
-Over 80% of the worlds population is allergic to dairy. Less so for people of European descent, but still significant. Most people never realize they are allergic, and suffer as a result. Many people who go vegan find letting go dairy to be a huge asset to their overall health and performance as a result.
-There are long lists of professional athletes who are/were vegan or vegetarian. A few notables include Carl Lewis (during his prime), Edwin Moses, several Mr. Universe winners, and 70% of Men's Ironman winners.
-Veganism is not a weight loss plan! If you're doing it just to trim body fat, that's not a good idea. The only reason there is this perception that vegan=lean, or skinny, is because people don't eat enough! Meat, butters, and other dairy products are very dense in calories, so to eat the same amount of calories you may need to increase your perceived intake of food slightly.
-Faster recovery on the other hand is something to look forward to- many, many people have experienced this. Much of this has to do with eating foods which are less acidic, and more digestible.
-If you want to succeed, I recommend seeking out new and different foods, instead of trying to replace everything with a vegan version. There are so many foods which have a tasty vegan alternative, but are very processed, and in my opinion unhealthy. For me, it just defeats the purpose to have foods like "vegan sausage".
-Diet is important for our health and fitness, but it is just one component. There is no magic pill, and no substitute for hard work.
-There are many, many advantages to being vegan I have found, especially in day to day health. Now, it is definitely possible to get sick, but I haven't had so much as a common cold since becoming vegan nearly 10 years ago. Most people can't imagine almost never getting sick, yet I can't imagine never not feeling great.
-Any change is hard, and I can't say it will be easier or harder as a college student. I will say however that I grew up without knowing a single other vegetarian for over 10 years, then switched to vegan in college with little trouble.
Best of luck, whatever you do!
