You do not have to go out in 8:45 for the first two miles.
Pace yourself.

how about just letting him run naturally and like he feels. we'd be a heck of alot better off leaving the heart monitors, garmins, cool sunglasses, and fancy $hit at home. better yet, take a LESSON from the kenyans.
what is wrong with 2nd and the course record?
don't change a I thing Sammy!
1st mile 4:12!!!! GO SAMMY...just like Old Henry use to do it!....except I think Henry 1st mile was 4:08

Except we're NOT kenyan (or Ethiopian) or whatever. It is the technology (if used used properly - which it's not by too many "old school" coaches) that will allow Americans (born anyway - taking out Meb, Lagat, Abdi, etc.) to close the gap. It will NOT happen otherwise. Just having training groups in Oregon, unless this stuff is used (Rupp and altitude tents, etc.) and used properly (not necessarily a given) then Americans wiol lag behind. It's because there are too many "old school and behind the times" coaches in the NCAA which is why only a handful of Americans race fast these days - this is no longer the era of Rodgers, Shorter, Virgin, etc. Their performance levels would no longer make the grade on the world scene today. It's not enough to pretend that you can level the playing field by doing what they (Kenyans do), there must be more involved to train with absolute intelligence and scientific backing for EACH individual. When this starts to happen at the NCAA level (which it doesn't), then and only then, will the gap be closed. Right now it's still about winning NCAA titles (understandably), but it also means that athletes are already behind the "kenyan curve" when they graduate - it doesn't have to be that way.

Nothing's wrong with 2nd at NCAA XC nationals. That's a great accomplishment. But if he wants to win he should pace himself so he doesn't see a repeat of last year's race.

Didn't Henry Rono get taken to school by Salazar in NCAA XC, just like Chelanga did by Rupp last year? Why repeat proven failure?
