This thread pertains to runners that can break 14:30 in a 5k. I am wondering why so many people do not train hard anymore and are always recovering from the last workout. If you are an elite distance runner I feel anything over 6:30 pace is just calorie burning and does not help you build your aerobic base. I believe in recovery but not at extremely slow paces. No one should give the Kenyan argument because they do slow miles after doing a 5 min miles earlier that day so they do not have a quality issue. The runner that just waddles out the door after sitting on his ass all day and runs 10 miles at 8 minute pace is just wasting his time. Why can't someone recover while running six minute miles? The Vdot tables show that someone that can run a 14:13 5k should be doing 6:13 for his easy pace. If someone does two workouts a week and say he averages four miles of intervals for each one. That is only 8 miles of hard running for the week! If that person is doing 80 or 90 miles a week that is just not enough quality running. Whatever happened to people running their long runs at a good clip or God forbid do a tempo run the day before or after a workout. I feel colleges would have a lot more runners at 14:00 5ks if they followed this plan. Obviously the risk of injury goes up but it does for any elite runner trying to get to the next level.
