Adrian Royle

fernandez couldn't beat derrick even if he had two years of full healthy training. There is no way... Derrick has an improvement curve each year that slopes twice as steep as big F-dog, and Hank for that matter. Derrick will win every NCAA event he runs in from this day forward

No, Adrian Royle was friends with some of the guys around San Luis Obispo who had formed an informal training group called tHe "Moosehead Athletic Club: Running and Rowing".

Based on the Moosehead Run starting out in Los Osos and over the sand dunes and up through Montana de Oro State Park. Moosehead brew from Canada had just become somewhat popular in the area in the late 70's, early 80's so it was consumed with some good munchies after the run was over with

Royle befriended some of these guys and probably swapped shirts. The singlet he wore in the 10K at Oregon was not a Moosehead beer shirt but a Moosehead AC shirt.

I am sorry for going off. My point to this is the super cardiovascular system of German Fernandez. When he has been interviewed in the past he talks about his ability to block out the pain.I went and found the May issue of 1982. The race is on page 14 and 15. On page 14 there is a photo "Singin" in the rain? From the left Royle, ALSAL, SULEIMAN NYAMBUI, and Heny Rono. On page 15 Rono states that he was 70% fit for the race. On Page 16 there is a great interview with Rono. In that interview he states that for the race he was 100% mentally ready to race. My point to all this that German is like Rono mentally and cardiovascular. I do not know how fit he is, but even his coach says anywhere from 6th to 10th, would not be a surprise. I know one race was track and Monday's race X-Country. I think history repeats its self.German will do what he has done in the past and win. Read the interviews from the USA JR XCountry champs and listen and read how Derrick say German is too strong. That will be the case on Monday. When you are born gifted and have the burning desire to succeed it can be done. OSU for the win with German leading the way.

Fernandez injured and training only a few months after another injury beat Derrick at World's, after beating him at American XC, and now Fernandez has had five months since American outdoor track to recover and get in shape. Why wouldn't he be in ass kicking shape by this point? I don't know. Smith should know what kind of shape he's in, but he may be sandbagging. What we do know is that he states explicitly that he will continue a conservative strategy of asking the team to stick to Stanford's no.3 guy, whereas Derrick says in the interview linked to the front page that he and his teammates are going to give it everything they have got for the win. Derrick's not going to be reined in from a minute back with 2k to go. So, if Fernandez doesn't win, it might not even be because he's not in shape to do it. It might just be Smith's strategy.

Great. But what about the other runners who were also born gifted and also "have the burning desire to succeed"? It has no relevance.

Am I the only one troubled by a 50-something that writes and types so badly? I generally believe that the older you are in America, the better you are at reading, writing and punctuation, but along comes a guy older than me who writes like he is drunk and challenges that notion.

This is conservative indeed. Keying off of the top team's 3rd runner guarantees you no worse than 2nd provided you have 5 guys running in a pack that averages in the low teens. Frankly, unless Stanford has a couple of runners bomb, OSU isn't good enough to put 5 runners in front of Stanford's 3rd. They might be able to put 3 there, but no way 5, and it's doubtful that their 5th guy can beat Stanford's 5th.

So, unless OSU is running just to get a podium spot, they need a different strategy.

stanford 1, 4, 18, 19, 20 (62)

osu 7,9,15,16,17 (64)

So, no guarantees with this strategy.

Play it like that and you need a lot of things to work out right, among them hoping that your top guys can move up significantly in the last couple miles, stanford not packing up their 3-5 guys, and stanford's third man not falling pretty far back early (that is, you end up trying to move up from 30th with 2k to go, while stanford has two in the top five).

YOUR CRAZY TO THINK STAFORD AND OSU ARE GOING GET ALL THERE GUYS IN THE TOP 20...THERE NO STANFORD 2003 TEAM STATUS.

I think the "beat the 3rd man" strategy was for their conference meet. What was Fernandez's injury anyway? They mention he was out for 8 weeks but I haven't read what exactly the injury was.
