This 14 year old 9th grade runner, a girl, was bragging to me how her coach told her that she was one of the strongest freshman runners in her area. This coach supposedly told her that if she kept improving that she would be able to get a scholarship to any college in the area. She then went on to tell me that she ran her best 5k yet. I asked her what her time was and she told me that it was "somewhere in the 29's, and that she broke 30 because she didn't walk that race." I didn't know how to respond other than saying "Good job. Keep working hard." How can a coach tell some kid that she can get a scholarship anywhere she wants when she is running/walking that slow of a race?
