I got a sfx on my second metatarsal. It is healing well. The bone now has a callous formed all around it. How long does the callous last? Should you wait for the callous to go away before you try to return to running?

I don't have an answer for you, but I'm curious, what does the callous feel like? How do you know you have a callous? I'm also recovering from a second metatarsal stress fracture, and I feel some discomfort in the area, but it's different and much less intense than the original stress fracture pain. I wonder if this could be from the callous.

If I run my finger along the 2d metatarsal, especially along the side next to the 1st, I can feel a fleshy bump about half way up the bone. The 2d met feels like it is swollen, but it doesn't really hurt much anymore. The ortho said that was the boney callous that had formed around the area of the stress fracture. It showed up as a cloudy spot on the x-ray and a big bright area on the bone scan.
My sfx was right in the middle of the 2d met. The pain was originally right on the spot, but moved around a lot. Now, I am pretty much pain free, but can still feel just a little something if I push on the mid-point of the bone. Still wearing a boot.
I also think the callous makes my foot feel stiff.
pretty much if you can hop up and down on the injured foot and honestly feel no pain on impact, you can probably ease back into running. you'll probably have "phantom pain" in the foot off and on for a while though.they can be interesting and vary a lot.
How long have you been in the boot for?
