because of a coach.
because of a coach.
400x1m
8x400 in 80 (was in about 15:20 shape at the time)...did not get any faster than in hs
i want so badly to say the name of the school and coach
will not though, my apologies future recruits
Our football coach subbed for the gym teacher one day and made us lift weights. I had a meet the next day and I was so sore I could hardly run.
Lifting weights would be the most pointless workout ever besides stretching and doing core work.
^^ false
however the day before a meet, not the brightest haha
6 sets of 660 (yards, back in the day), 660 walk recovery 550 ,550 walk recovery. Every rep was pretty much all out. with the super long recovery walks, we were there till almost 7 PM doing the workout. That was my frosh year in HS, first year ever running.

If you run fast, run slow, run up hill, run downhill, run as much as you can, and get plenty of rest, all that other stuff is just garbage.
to each his own, theres no way to win this argument haha (as evidenced by the millions of other threads on the topic)
my parting shot will be that while i cant scientifically justify the benefits of such practices, jerrys group, salazars group, hall, geb, bekele, el g, lagat, and just about everyone else fast seems to think core, weights, stretching is beneficial
a lot of jokers on letsrun seem to think they are pointless (though are definitly more passionate about the idea)...
all im gonna say...

Do you know why all those groups do that stuff?
The first reason is that after they run (which takes very little time compared to other sports)they have an immense amount of free time they need to fill.
The second reason is that they lack confidence and by doing this extra stuff, it helps them believe it will make them better. Why do you think every runner has to time their workouts down to the tenth of a second? The workouts give them confidence if they go well but they could do those same workouts with no need to know the times it took them. The race is really the only place where time matters.
If you told runners Geb eats 17 green jelly beans every thursday, you would do well to own a green jelly bean factory.
oxygen delivery.
Work that didn't focus on aerobic development and was top speed work, without the necessary background.
Starting out of blocks on an indoor track and running 55 meter sprints 8 times.
.......I ran the 800 and mile.
How's this for the final "sharpening" workout just days before the championship race: 6 x mile with 3 minutes rest at significantly faster than race pace.

You are either really weak and pathetic or don't know how to lift properly.

if you were peaking for a 10k, and you went 10k pace that might make some sense...

cant resist
listen to your argument man...they believe it will make them better
they, with their highly paid (for our sport anyways) coaches, trainers, drs, and physical therapists (not to mention sub 13 5000 prs)...believe it will make them better
you, with your 9-5 job and 15:30 5000 pr from college (no offense meant just describing the typical proponent of your theory)...believe that they are wrong
no correlation doesnt equal causation and the fact that they all do this stuff and are successful does not necessarily prove that the supplemental work is contributing anything to their success, it certainly doesnt hurt my case
there is no undisputed scientific proof that core, weights, and stretching helps, there is just as little proof that it does not, so objectively, the argument for it helping is a hell of a lot stronger (if for no other reason than the fact that people who believe it helps are a lot more credible)
personal exprience is still the best evidence but to get this you have to give the work an honest and extended chance (and no this is not analogous to the green jelly bean scenario as core, weights, and stretching at least works the muscle groups involved in running)...
