Is $5 per pic a good price to pay for a printable high resolution T&F picture ? I have a newsletter and the freelance photographer (& certified USATF Official) wants $5 per picture and wanted to know I am going to print it in color. Is that a good price ? I heard the major international track meets, marathons, and road races have volunteers providing free pictures and race reports to publications. I guess the small meets don't have so many volunteering.
High end cameras and lenses are expensive so if the pictures are of high quality $5 doesn`t go too far towards the photographer`s expenses, not to mention his time.
this guy sounds like a photographer. Maybe he is your seller.
that's high too much. a glut exists.
many factors involved including size, quality, your effort and post processing. also since they are buying a bulk consider that as well.
so if they are looking for say a 5x7. that will cost you $.99, so add a 15 to even 250% fee for the print, and then add a 15-20% royalty fee. then take like 10-25% off for a bulk order of over a 100 photos. so you are looking at around $5 a photo.
i would charge 150% for the print, 15% royalties, and take a 10% discount for buying in bulk.
surf to the marathon website to obtain the email address of the meet director, media officer, public relations, sports information, etc. ask about free high quality pictures, stats, elite athlete bios, race video clips, maps, city weather stats, geographic surveys, sponsors, politicians, V.I.P., etc. for your newsletter. they will give the info to you for free and spend time with you to make sure you have enough material. at least i've never had to pay any money for any of that. but you better publish something good, else they won't give you squat the next time you ask. all marathons want free publicity. also mail them 10 copies of the newsletter, plus URL, etc.
$5 is more than enough for the rich volunteers and retired fire depatmentals that photograph the events i've officiated at.
